Learn faster by identifying with the expert
Quickly master skills. You might think that would mean practicing every day, reading, signing up for courses and all sorts of things. Sure, this can help you learn new skills, but then it takes a very long time.
Fortunately, there is a way to learn quickly, and somewhere you already know that way because you've done this before. Here I will address it first
When you are little, between zero and four years old, you have a lot of things to learn. Huge things, much more than you learn in a day now. You have to learn how things work in your family, your environment, how to deal with your parents, and if they are divorced, what about step-parents, grandparents, and siblings.
How you deal with your culture - Dutch, Indian or Islamic culture - and how it goes in the village where you live. Are those rules suddenly different there? And the culture in your family, how does it relate to the village?
And then you have to go to school, where you have to learn all sorts of things all over again .
When you're that age, you're not at all asking critical questions about how it works. You just do. For example, you're imitating your father and your mother. You are also a combination of your father's 20,000 genes and your mother's 20,000 genes.
A fruit fly has more genes than you.
So when you say that what you do is genetic, I always think that won't be too bad. That's nature.
Then there’s also nurture: how we’re raised. What rules, ideas, and traits do we pick up along the way?
And we have genetic nurture: what environment do we grow up in. If you grow up in Africa, your IQ is on average 11 points lower, because in that environment there is less availability of anything that will boost your IQ.
So we get all this as a gift. You just get 11 points of IQ gift compared to third world countries. You just have to be born in the right place. And you can do something with that or not.
Then there’s our environment, which stimulates us and elicits certain behaviors, as well as our upbringing and our genes.
One of the most important things you do is imitate your mom and dad. Then later - when you have children of your own - you suddenly do statements you learned from one of your parents, whereas the used to hate them. That something suddenly flashes out, making you think, "Shit, now I sound just like my mother (or my father) and I don't want that at all." And yet you're just doing the same thing one of your parents used to do.
Most people do things the same way their parents did, and you see that reflected in their children as well. You see certain inherited behaviors, but also inherited health conditions. Back pain, shoulder pain, neck pain. Yes, our whole family has those problems. Yes, you all do the same thing, too.
It also makes sense to do the same, after all, you have to survive. After all, you have to know how everything works.
You can even go against it, and even that is often then because of your father or mother.
Whether you rebel or do exactly the same thing, in the beginning you do exactly the same thing. Later the rebellious comes. Then you see people have certain traits or the same walk as one of their parents.
Makes perfect sense, because you want to learn things as quickly as possible.
But you may later find that you’d rather adopt the skills of someone else than those of your parents. Perhaps they aren’t the best role models for the goals you have now.
So this is a quick way to learn something.
But how do you do this as an adult?
With deep trance identification, you can then "imitate someone else."
For example, if you want the skills of Martin Luther King when he gave that speech, you step into him.
There are three things you can believe about what happens next.
- You step into that person's energy and you get all kinds of information, skills, images and ideas as a result.
- You step into your idea of that person. Everything you have unconsciously picked up suddenly comes to the surface, and it feels like that is Martin Luther King.
- You channel the information that hangs there from Martin Luther King.
I believe the third one. The entire universe is made up of information, of bits. People used to think it was all matter, then they thought it was energy, and now physicists believe it’s all information—all bits.
I think we, that our brains, channel that information. I channel the information from Edwin. The IRS, my mother, my father and those around me say it. So this is confirmed every time. Everything says I am Edwin and I say it myself. So I channel all the info that Edwin has and that is hanging out there.
I then imagine my brain as a kind of receiver channeling the information.
So then I can channel myself on Richard Brandson and I get very interesting ideas, insights and beliefs and then I think, "Wow man, you can think about life that way too."
Those insights really stick, and the feelings linger as well.
I did that a lot with aikido, and that’s when I had very clear insights and feelings, such as realizing how gut instinct works and how to move my arm. Because I was focusing on the founder of aikido.
That’s how my skills improved tremendously. It wasn’t a linear progression, but suddenly I took a leap to the next level.
I believe you then tune in with your brain to the channel of that person you want to learn something from, and then you channel that information. Because it's just hanging there.
Energy and information is always there and you need to grab it.
Information is also noticeable, in your body. It is then so, so you feel it. You feel that new knowledge throughout your body.
This is how you used to learn from people you wanted to learn from, and this is how you can do it again from people you would like to learn from.
Now I’m getting so much better results with CrossFit by tuning in to sources other than just Edwin Selij. Instead, I tune in to Matthew Frazier, the three-time CrossFit champion. He’s always up for a workout, and suddenly everything feels a lot easier.
Your body suddenly goes a lot faster and you get stronger, because your mindset also changes and then things go very differently. You start acting differently and also your body changes (so much faster and much stronger in my case) if you tell yourself that you are that person.
Your body then suddenly adapts to it.
Of course, you also have to deal with your genes. If you align yourself with individuals with skills you want, you will learn them much faster.

On the contrary, if you believe more in those other two forms of deep trance identification, it is still important to find a role model.
Maybe you already have a role model in your mind. For example, a great musician, a great athlete or a great entrepreneur.
Observe that person, read a biography and then go into deep trance identification. Everything you have picked up consciously and subconsciously during the observations then comes to you, which also allows you to quickly get new ideas about how you can address issues. You can get realizations and this can give you an awful lot of knowledge.
