Getting active: Where do you unconsciously "turn on" yourself?

Do you feel like you are "off"? Like a television on standby, waiting for someone to press the remote and turn you on to become active? But what makes you turn on? That you become active

Do you turn on from work? Do you turn on from people? Do you turn on from relationships?

For example, I "turn on" ideas. When I read a book or magazine, listen to a podcast, if I get an idea from it, my brain makes a leap of joy.

I love ideas, people with ideas, good ideas. Preferably as many ideas as possible.

A while ago I had a conversation with my son about mangas and that they are based on light novels. In the Netherlands, I don't think there is anyone who thinks, "Gee let me turn that novel into a comic." And then also in a different form. Manga, for example, is black and white, so you imagine it further with your thoughts. I really thought that was a gap in the market.

So that then comes out of a conversation and that's where I really get into it.

People with cool stories and cool ideas, from whom I learn and gain new insights. Then when that comes from my son, it's totally super cool. I then turn to that.

But where do you turn?

This is an important indicator of how you can plan your life? For example, do you get active from your work? Of course work is not always fun, I have that too. Not everything I do for work I go 'on' from, but those things also just have to happen. I don't go 'off' from it either, that's more of a neutral feeling.

You also have things you "go out" on. That's where you run on empty.

But the things you "turn on" are the grade markers.

Can you do more of the things that make you active?

And some things actually make you inactive, or you go "off" and you start avoiding those things. Because that doesn't help you as much. Because if you never become active from things again, that doesn't feel comfortable.

If you're just put out, you have to be careful not to go out, burn out or get depressed. There is then nothing left to turn to.

To avoid that, look for activities that will help you become active.

Everyone is born "on. If you look at children, you will see that they are 'on'. They 'turn on' to almost everything. But at some point more and more is turned off. There is then less enthusiasm, there is less laughter and they start to conform more and more .

If you are then in a sour environment, you take on that sourness from other people as well. Then you do have a problem, because you have become that way. You were not born that way. You can change it, fortunately.

To change this, it is important to consider what you are "turning on.

You only have 1 life. So people, relationships, or work that you "put out," you have to think about whether you want to continue with that. Because if you get stuck in it, then at some point you can be completely 'turned off,' and then you have to change. And you don't want to let it get to that point.

It starts with a pain and a complaint. Then you go to a doctor and they can't find anything. It all starts mentally and then it becomes psychological. And you go on and on and then it becomes somatic (physical), then it becomes psychosomatic and then it becomes burnout or worse.

So you better listen right away when your unconscious indicates that something is not going well. Sometimes you need to wrap things up, I understand that too, but if you don't listen for too long, you're going to have problems with that.

You better get started right away, so you don't have to change everything then when you go all out.

Factors on which you can be "turned on

Getting active can also be thought of as getting motivated to do something. Then it's helpful to know that your life is made up of several factors. You have your work and your personal life. You also might have what you consider important in life, such as how people look at you, what relationships you consider important(friends and/or family) and things like that.

So when you start looking at things that turn you "on" you can look at:

  • Things you want to achieve (which is why I'm so turned on by ideas, because who knows, they might help me).
  • Things you want to do consistently (such as regular exercise or sports, reading, gaming, hiking, whatever you like)
  • Things that will help you improve yourself and become more confident.
  • Things that make you feel in control (such as going into business, or things you want to do daily to feel "in control")
  • Things that make you feel like you belong, or are unique[1].

If you can make a list of these things that encourage you to do this, then you have already made a nice step in becoming active and motivated to make something of your life.

What need needs to be met?

To be turned on, or motivated, there often must be an opportunity to fulfill a need. Many theories of personal development, such as with Maslow's pyramid, Herzberg's 2 factors theory and Aristotle's seven causes, have the fulfillment of a particular need as an overlap[2].

This also shows that what you are "turned on" to is something that is internal to you and is different for everyone. Even in your life this can be different because you are in a different stage of life.

For example, you are in the next "level" or level of the Maslow pyramid. For example, if you want stability and want to buy a house for this purpose, the prospect of a steady job may 'turn you on' when you are on a job search and see opportunities for it. But if you already have that house, for example, something that can improve your social life may 'turn you on' and that steady job is no longer so fascinating (after all, you already have it).

If that need is not being met, by your work or in your relationships, for example, it can cause you to be "turned off. You are there, but only because you should be (and because you have to pay that bill for that house anyway).

Need and identity

The need to be met may also be linked to your identity. For example, I identify myself as an entrepreneur, among other things, and perhaps this makes me "turn on" ideas, because what idea could be fun to do business with?

For example, if you identify yourself as helpful, you can be turned on to very different things. Even goals of people (or companies) you want to help can then trigger certain "on" actions.

Need and meaning

Another need that needs to be met for many people is that the life you lead be meaningful. So you can "take on" an opportunity to be something for someone else, to help people.

Or just the need that shows other people that you are someone of significance. Showing your knowledge, for example with a blog or vlog, can then be something you "turn on.

At work, this means you can turn on opportunities that provide promotion (move up the social ladder), more responsibility (more choice), recognition (employee of the month) and personal development (being able to do that one course).

Finding out why you are off and whose on

Sometimes you find yourself in some kind of transitional phase of your life, just not getting out of the transition. You may then feel like you're stuck. You sense that something is missing, that you are "turning off," but you don't know what you are "turning on" again.

To avoid just going into standby mode, you can seek help from a hypnotherapist. For example, with the help of the hypnotherapist, you can find out which of your needs have already been met, which is why you are now starting to doze off anyway, and which needs have not yet been met.

For example, you can look at your identity and to what extent your life gives meaning to yourself or others and whether you want to make some changes in that.

Once this is accomplished, you can figure out how to get there with some kind of future roadmap. This can activate and motivate you to move forward again, which in turn makes you feel "turned on.

With this technique, you first visualize where you want to be with your life a year from now, for example, and then from that point you take one step back each time until the hypnosis session where you will be then.

This technique can work very well to get moving again.
