Vacations disappoint: Why you should travel to yourself first

Have you ever felt that your vacation, despite all the pretty pictures, was a bit disappointing? That long-awaited trip that didn't deliver the promised peace or freedom. A vacation disappoints because of several reasons.

Perhaps your expectations were too high, or maybe you were trying to escape something. We seek relaxation in faraway places, but the journey to yourself is the only one that offers you true, lasting peace and freedom.

As an expert in inner growth and well-being, I understand these dynamics better than anyone. In this article, I’ll explore why vacations sometimes fall short of expectations and how you can find that priceless inner peace, which is always within reach.

Then vacation is fun and no longer necessary.

Why your vacation sometimes really disappoints

Vacation. The word alone conjures up images of carefree days, blue skies, and deep relaxation. Yet you often hear stories—or experience it yourself—that the reality is quite different .

And that’s a shame, because research shows that a truly relaxing vacation leads to greater feelings of happiness even after you return[1]. Unfortunately, a truly relaxing vacation is the exception rather than the rule.

The romance of the perfect trip collides with the inevitable reality. Why, despite good intentions, do vacations so often disappoint?

There are several reasons why that long-awaited break may not find the peace of mind you seek, namely:

  • Unrealistic expectations: We feed ourselves Instagram-perfect images and fantasies of absolute relaxation. The pressure to enjoy ourselves is high, and every little imperfection can feel like a huge disappointment.

Furthermore, research also shows that if you’re a man with narcissistic traits, this increases the likelihood of a disappointing vacation[2]. So if your vacations are always disappointing, this could be an indication of a completely different problem.

  • Escape from reality: Many see vacationing as a way to "escape" from stress, work pressure or personal problems for a while[3].

The downside? Your problems travel with you. They wait patiently for you to come home, often exacerbated by the lack of real processing.

  • The illusion of freedom: A temporary break from your routine gives you a sense of freedom, but this is fleeting. It is not a lasting state of being, but a pause that ends as soon as you pack your bags again.
  • Logistical stress: Transportation, accommodation, scheduling, unexpected expenses; a vacation can be a logistical puzzle that creates more stress than relaxation. Think lost luggage or a hotel room that disappoints.
  • Social pressure and compromises: Whether you’re traveling with family or friends, there are always compromises to be made. This can lead to frustration and the feeling that you can’t fully be yourself, even in your free time.

These factors mean that the quest to find peace away from home is often frustrating and the vacations feel like a vacation setback.

Begin the journey to yourself

Unlike the external vacation, the journey to self is an adventure that is always available, wherever you are. It is not bridging physical distance, but there is mental and emotional space to be created.

This is the best vacation you can take because this is where you find your true self. You are always there and you can always offer yourself a resting place.

As long as you know who your true self is.

The inner journey is a process of awareness and connection, with the following core aspects:

  • Self-reflection: This is the foundation. It's about becoming aware of your thoughts, emotions, patterns and motivations. Why do you react the way you react? What are your deepest desires and fears? Keeping a journal can help tremendously with this.
  • Acceptance: After self-reflection comes acceptance. Embracing who you are, including your imperfections. Realizing that you are good enough, exactly as you are now. This lays the foundation for true inner peace.
  • Connecting with your true self: This is the heart of the journey to self. Letting go of external masks and expectations, and discovering the person you are when all layers fall away. This allows you to be yourself anywhere, anytime.
  • The source of inner peace: The deepest realization of this journey is that peace does not come from outside, but is an internal state. It is the assurance that you always have a refuge within yourself, regardless of external circumstances.

Unlike an external vacation, this inner journey is free, customized for you, and always at your fingertips. It offers a lasting form of fulfillment that has no end.

Inner peace in your daily life

The journey to yourself doesn’t have to mean giving up everything and going to meditate in a cave. It’s actually the small, conscious steps in your daily life that make the difference. Here are practical ways to find lasting inner peace:

  1. Integrate mindfulness and meditation: Start with five minutes a day. Focus on your breathing or the sounds around you. This trains your mind to be in the present moment and instantly calms you down.

Research shows that starting to meditate can have similar effects to vacation[4].

  1. Journal keeping: Write daily about your thoughts, feelings and experiences. This helps process emotions and gain insight into your own patterns.
  2. Setting boundaries: Learn to say " no" to things that cost you energy and "yes" to what nourishes you. This protects your mental space and helps you be yourself in your choices.
  3. Get out into nature: Spend time in nature. Whether it’s a walk in the woods, gardening, or simply sitting outside, nature has a proven calming effect on our nervous system and helps you ground yourself.
  4. Conscious breathing exercises: Practice deep abdominal breathing, especially in stressful moments. Taking five deep breaths through your nose and slowly exhaling through your mouth can calm you physiologically.
  5. Digital detox moments: Schedule set times when you are offline. Put away your phone, close your laptop and enjoy silence or an offline activity. This reduces overstimulation.
  6. Practicing self-compassion[5]: Be just as gentle and understanding toward yourself as you would be toward a good friend. Perfectionism is the enemy of inner peace. It’s okay to make mistakes; learning is what matters.

By applying these practices consistently, you build a solid foundation of finding peace that no external circumstance can take away.

Avoid these pitfalls along the journey

The journey to self is not a sprint, but a marathon. As with any major undertaking, there are pitfalls to watch out for:

  • Impatience: Expecting immediate and linear results. Inner growth is organic and takes time. The journey is faster for some people than others. It is a process of trial and error.
  • Comparing Yourself to Others: Everyone has their own pace and path. What works for one person doesn’t necessarily work for another. Focus on your own progress, not that of others.
  • The "all or nothing" mentality: Not every day has to be perfect. Small steps and consistent effort are more valuable than the occasional heroic, but unsustainable, attempt.
  • Placing the Blame Outside Yourself: When things go wrong, it’s easy to blame your surroundings, other people, or circumstances. The journey to yourself requires taking responsibility for your own reactions and inner state.
  • Keep seeking distractions: Avoiding the discomfort of silence or confrontational thoughts by constantly seeking distractions (social media, too much work, addictions). This sabotages your quest for inner peace.

By recognizing these pitfalls, you can bypass them and make lasting progress on your inner path. This will also make you more resilient and ensure a better vacation experience, should you decide to travel externally again.

Vacations disappointing? Not anymore

While external vacations have their charm and place to take a break from the daily grind, they rarely offer the deep, lasting inner peace we so long for.

You can only find them by taking the journey to yourself. It is the most valuable investment you can make in yourself, a journey that requires no tickets, hotels or perfect weather conditions. Your true self is always available, an anchor point of peace and acceptance.

Ideal during moments on vacation where you would have all kinds of judgments before.

This inner anchoring enhances all your experiences, including future external vacations. When you find peace within yourself, you are less dependent on external circumstances to feel good. You can then enjoy each moment to the fullest, exactly as it is. Embrace this priceless journey - the destination is yourself.

Hypnotherapy for the journey to self

Hypnotherapy is a powerful method for deepening your journey to your true self. Hypnotherapy utilizes a relaxed, focused state of consciousness in which you gain access to unconscious patterns, beliefs, and blockages.

In this state, you can heal old emotional wounds, reprogram negative self-images and gain deeper insights into who you really are[6]. Unlike popular misconceptions snuggle, you always maintain control during hypnosis. Instead, it is a collaboration between you and the therapist. Many people experience more peace, clarity and self-acceptance after sessions. It is like exploring your own inner landscape with a compass in your hands.

This form of inner work can be a powerful complement to daily practices such as meditation and journaling, and contributes to lasting inner peace that does not require a vacation or external circumstances.
