Releasing emotions without feeling them: The Emotion Replacement Technique
Releasing emotions without feeling them. This is possible with the emotion replacement technique (EVT). You learn this technique in the institute's 2.0 training, which is the follow-up training to the 1.0. This is a technique that works very well when your client is in deep trance and it works well with young children because they are always in hypnosis
These don't have to tell where the feeling comes from or what causes it. Children sometimes find the former quite difficult, as it may have to do with mom or dad. As a child, will you honestly tell them it has something to do with their parents? I don't think so. They are going to protect their mom and dad.
So then it's pretty hard to get something like this out there.
Fortunately, with this technique, that’s not necessary, because you simply remove the feeling. You also replace it with a different feeling. For example, you ask them what feeling they’d like to have instead, such as happiness or calm. And then you instill that emotion.
This technique is genius. It was developed by Tom Silver, an American.
A case study with EVT
I’ve helped many people with it myself, and now I teach it to my students. To do this, I first give a demonstration. A student then becomes my client for a moment. This shows just how well the technique works. So I still give sessions, but often as part of the training program.
For trainees, this technique is often life-changing because the technique works so well. In the process, the trainee understands what is intended. That combination is gold.
I helped someone who was experiencing stomach tension, which was preventing her from going deeply into hypnosis. After the session, she said she had never been so deeply in hypnosis before, because the technique relieved the tension.
So before this technique she could never get very deep into hypnosis and now this technique worked for her and she could suddenly get super deep into hypnosis.
At one point, she no longer remembered what I had said or done, but her subconscious responded very well to my instructions. With this technique, you can release emotions that have been bothering you for years.
But you have to feel the pain to deal with it, right?
Many people do not understand this technique. Who ask, "Don't you have to live through and feel that pain to learn how to deal with it so that you become a better and stronger person?"
I find this interesting, and it also comes a bit from psychology.
But now imagine you were faced with a choice: You have a daughter who suffers from a lot of anger and she can get rid of it in one session. Or we leave her with that anger all her life, but she will become a better or stronger person because of it?
When you look at it that way, it's a very crazy idea. You just think it should go away.
After all, how will your child grow up without that anger? Different indeed, but does that make your child weaker or less resilient?
I don’t think so. I don’t think anger makes you more resilient or better if it continues to take its toll on your body. Anger isn’t necessarily bad, but rage or fear aren’t helpful.
Yes, you can cope with your fear, but you’re still afraid. Whereas someone can be free of fear after a single session. That person then feels fine and is no longer afraid. So who is better, worse, more resilient, or less resilient? This is a tricky question, and the comparison might not hold up entirely.
But if you think a little logically, what do you learn from "dealing with it"? Whereas if it's not there, you don't have to learn how to deal with it. Fine right?
Garbage in your house or garbage in your head
This is kind of like the idea that you become a better person if you have a lot of trash in your house and learn to deal with it. So I’ll just dump a whole lot of trash in your house, and then it’s fine, right? Great, it’ll make you a better person. You’ll learn to appreciate the trash. Yeah, it does stink, but you’ll find it hard to let people in because there’s trash everywhere. You’ll have to build a little wall around it. You’ll just have to learn to deal with it.
If so, you have become someone who has learned to handle garbage around the house very well.
Another person says, "Can't you just take that away?" And that person then just has it taken away. Then that person has a clean house and doesn't have to deal with anything. People can just go inside and that person with garbage still wants to keep people out all the time.
Now if you substitute the word garbage for an emotion you want to get rid of, this piece might be a little easier to understand.
I get where the demand is coming from, but it's still separate. Things mold you as a person, but that also means that if you can quickly transform things then move on.
I get the idea. There’s something to be said for everything. My life wasn’t always great either— depression, anxiety, and addictions have also shaped me into who I am today. But if I’d had a choice, with the knowledge I have now, so to speak, I wouldn’t have had to self-medicate for fifteen years.
I don't regret that, but if I had a choice, I wouldn't have done it. Why poison yourself if you don't have to? It is as it is and it goes as it goes, but I think when you give people a choice, they choose to get rid of the bad emotions.
So you won't be bothered by it anymore.
I see it as a level-up you can achieve with a cheat 😉.

What problems can you use the emotion replacement technique for?
As mentioned, you can use the emotion replacement technique if you suffer from negative emotions, such as anger and fear.
Fear of failure or exam anxiety
Anxiety isn’t necessarily something you always have, and sometimes a little anxiety can even be healthy. However, if you suffer from fear of failure or test anxiety, this can indeed cause you to fail your exams or other school assignments because you engage in avoidance behavior.
Among medical students, hypnosis has been used to reduce anxiety—such as through the Emotion Replacement Technique—and to build greater self-confidence before an exam, reinforcing the belief that they can actually pass it. In the study, the students received two 50-minute hypnotherapy sessions. With the exception of one participant, everyone passed the exam, and the vast majority of participants also genuinely felt that their anxiety had decreased[1].
Depressive feelings
Are you struggling with depressive emotions? Feelings that you’re worthless or not good enough? Hypnosis—and this technique, among others—can help in those cases as well. Research even shows that hypnosis is more effective against depressive symptoms than cognitive behavioral therapy[2]. Feelings of anxiety and hopelessness are much more effectively alleviated with hypnosis than with cognitive behavioral therapy alone. Cognitive behavioral therapy is often used by psychologists.
Anger
Anger is an emotion that sometimes does not help at all. For example, there was a case study of a man whose wife, before they went into courtship, had once been raped . For this, of course, he was furious that this had happened to her. Only that anger got in the way when she needed to vent about the incident, which was not helpful at all for the relationship. As a couple they followed hypnotherapy. This therapy helped to release the anger so that he could be an emotional shoulder for his wife. Here, guided visualization was used[3].
For serious illnesses
When you have a serious illness, such as cancer, it can trigger all kinds of emotions. Why did you get it? How will your life ever return to normal? Will you have a life later? Serious illnesses can evoke many negative emotions. Hypnosis can help you get into a better state both mentally and physically[4].
If treatment is mentally tough for you, hypnosis, with the emotion replacement technique, for example, can still make it easier for you to get through cancer treatment and suffer less from uncertainty that cancer (or any other serious illness) brings.
So hypnosis is very interesting to help yourself or other people if you suffer from negative events that cause negative emotions.
