Being Impatient: Ways to develop patience

You want something and ideally you want it right away. Being impatient is not always something that works in your favor. In this blog, we're going to talk about the pros and cons of being impatient and what you can do if you find that your impatience is having a negative impact on your life.

Impatience

Being impatient means you can't wait for certain results. You are then energetic, but with a negative undertone. You can almost say that someone is then agitated. This has both its advantages and disadvantages.

How much patience a person has varies from person to person. It greatly affects decisions people make. This is because it involves your expectations of what you will gain and lose in the long and short term. If you are impatient, you often consider short-term gains to be more important than if you are patient.

It even affects when you have children and when you have your second child (if you want to have one). What is funny is that if you are very impatient or just very patient you are less likely to have children than if you have a normal amount of patience[1].

The pros and cons of impatience

For example, people with a type A personality like quick results and are competitive. For researchers in science, this impatience often causes them to start and complete more studies and to have good quality. In addition, impatience also helps you in feeling capable[2], because you do not wait for someone else, but take the initiative yourself to achieve certain goals.

You often see the disadvantages of impatience in traffic, such as honking when someone takes too long to accelerate at a green traffic light. Tailgating when someone doesn't drive on and other road rage problems. This can eventually cause accidents, so impatience in the car can even be dangerous. At the same time, it is quite explainable if you have to be somewhere on time and you experience that time pressure[3].

In addition, rigid impatience, unhealthy impatience, can be a cause for developing ADHD, depression and it makes you more prone to addictions[4]. After all, you can't wait for a reward. You need to achieve that good feeling of winning right away, and if that doesn't happen, you'll end up in a bad mood.

Drugs can make people feel good initially, so that's one way to get rid of feelings of impatience.

Sometimes success takes time, but if you suffer from rigid impatience, it can therefore cause depressive feelings.

Being impatient is also a symptom of ADHD.

In addition to problems with drinking and drugs, research on adolescents shows that impatient adolescents are more likely to have higher weight, fail to save well and behave worse in class[5].

However, this impatience among young people does not necessarily have to do with not being able to wait for rewards. Being focused on the future also determines much of the impatience in young people[6]. They are eager to build their lives and simply achieve certain life goals as soon as possible.

Impatience at work

A study of insurance companies found that unhealthy impatience is not good for the number of insurance policies sold and that people are more likely to suffer from depressive symptoms when they are impatient.

In the process, impatient people are also more likely to be dissatisfied with their work[7].

Impatience in relationships

Being impatient is actually not helpful for having a healthy relationship either . Research shows that people who are impatient are more likely to start a new relationship when the previous one has gone out.

In addition, the likelihood of cheating is higher and even the likelihood of having unsafe sex is higher in someone who is unhealthily impatient[8].

It may therefore be wise if you are quickly entering new relationships, after the previous one has broken up, to find out if you are suffering from love addiction.

Impatient with your children

What is interesting is that impatient children often have impatient mothers as well. In a study where mothers were either allowed to have a certain amount of money in six months, or in 12 months, it was found that children of the mothers who chose the six months were more likely to be impatient than children of mothers who could wait 12 months for money[9].

In addition, there is even a correlation between impatient parents and children who are overweight[10].

Children are often known to copy, so this impatient behavior can also be copied.

By working with your impatience as a parent, you can remove beliefs that prevent you from being patient. Who knows what that will do for your child.

Where does being impatient come from?

Research shows that being impatient is often something you develop as a child and can cause problems with friends as early as young adulthood[11]. That development of impatience often comes from problems you may have when you are a child.

So if someone is experiencing so much impatience that it is causing problems, it is wise to see if there is a cause in that person's childhood. With hypnosis, you can then use the regression technique to see when a belief arose that is now causing impatience.

So you then go back into childhood and give or receive a suggestion to go back to the first moment when the impatient feeling was there. Then you can look at what happened then to explain this feeling, and in your mind you can change the moment as well.

Again, there are multiple techniques for that. Sometimes just empathizing with other people who were there at the time is enough to change a belief that is causing unhealthy impatience. Then the impatient feelings are no longer triggered[12].

Reducing impatience with hypnosis

So getting to the root cause and removing limiting beliefs is already a good way hypnosis can help you become more patient.

As mentioned, impatience at work can cause you to be dissatisfied with your job. It can even cause depression. What it can also cause you is burnout. These types of problems are also very treatable with hypnosis.

For example, research shows that hypnotherapy combined with cognitive behavioral therapy helps people to be more patient, among other things. In addition, it also helps reduce anger, experiencing time pressure, and dissatisfaction with work. On the contrary, it improves emotional stability and enjoyment of work[13].

How hypnosis does this is different for everyone. Because people all have unique lives, techniques used by hypnotherapists can vary from client to client.

Whereas for one person, regression with empathy for other people is effective in transforming impatience into patience, another person may actually need it, for example, to use their imagination to imagine how the situation could have been. Yet another person may need a conversation with the inner child.

During a conversation with the inner child, it is then made clear to the unconscious inner child that all is already well. That life is already stable and that he no longer needs to worry about reaching certain goals quickly.

Applying Gratitude

In addition, impatience often focuses on things you don't yet have. An exercise in gratitude for what you do have, or have accomplished, can help you change that focus from what is not to what is.

That changed focus also brings much peace, allowing you to experience the feeling of reward just by listing things you are grateful for.

Meanwhile, you can already get a gratitude journal in an awful lot of stores. Just filling it out can cause a shift in your mindset and feelings.

What to expect in hypnotherapy

The great thing about hypnotherapy is that people can be helped incredibly quickly. Often three sessions are enough to help people get rid of a problem.

In the first session, you'll have an exploratory talk that examines what a person's problem actually is and where it comes from. Then it is explained what hypnotherapy is and upon consent, the person with the problem is put into hypnosis and a start can be made to solve the problem.

The second session really pulls out all the techniques to solve the problem. This session often lasts the longest.

The third session is used to verify that the problem has actually been resolved in the person's daily life. Some further techniques may be applied to make adjustments if necessary.
