Living Based on Conditioning: 5 Signs You’re Doing It (and How to Break Free)
Do you ever have one of those moments when you look in the mirror and think: Who the hell am I, anyway? And why do I do the things I do?
If you’re completely honest with yourself, you’re probably not living your own life. You’re living the life of your parents. Of your teachers. Of society. In short: you’re living based on your conditioning. You’ve become a programmed robot who neatly colors within the lines, while deep down you feel that something isn’t quite right. Somewhere along the way, you’ve lost yourself.
And the worst part? You often don’t even notice it. It creeps in. From the day you’re born, you’re flooded with other people’s “software.” “Just act normal.” “Fit in.” “Be nice.” And boom, there you go. Your own unique software gets overwritten by the mass-produced nonsense of the outside world.
But how do you know if you’re being driven by your old patterns, or if you’re truly in the driver’s seat of your own life? Here are the five unmistakable signs that you’re living based on your conditioning. And believe me, it’s time for a harsh wake-up call.
1. You’re terrified of rejection
"Oh no, they won’t like me. I won’t fit in anymore. What will the neighbors think?"
Sound familiar? Congratulations, you’re trapped in a program. Because let me tell you one thing: a baby isn’t born with a fear of rejection. A baby poops in its diaper, cries when it’s hungry, and honestly couldn’t care less what the rest of the room thinks about it. A baby doesn’t necessarily feel rejected.
Until that moment arrives. The moment when that little one starts to realize: Wow, wait a minute. If I do this, Dad looks angry. If I do that, Mom suddenly isn’t there. If I cry, I’m ignored. Somewhere in those early years, a program gets hardwired into your brain. Bam! The conditioning is in place.
Everyone has this to a greater or lesser extent[1].
You associate rejection with survival. Because in the past, being cast out of the tribe literally meant death. But we no longer live in prehistoric times. You won’t die if someone doesn’t like you. So why do you still act as if your life depends on it? Fear of rejection is pure outdated software. It’s time for an update.
2. You’re just like a Barbapapa (You’re constantly adapting)
"Oh, do you want me to do it this way? Boom, then I’ll do it this way. Oh, does the boss want me to take on that role? Boom, then I’ll become that person."
You’re just like a Barbapapa (a cartoon character from the past). You’re fluid. You adapt to everything and everyone. You’ve become a chameleon in your own life.
And don’t get me wrong—back then, that probably saved you. It was your survival mechanism. By adapting, you kept the peace at home, survived that awful high school, or made sure you didn’t stand out. Which was absolutely the right thing to do at the time, of course.
But at some point, it can start to take a toll on your mental health[2].
So what now? Stop it! It no longer serves you. You’re not a Barbapapa. You’re a unique human being. You’re good enough exactly as you are. And the rest of the world will just have to accept that.
If people only like you because of the persona you adopt so that they feel comfortable, then they don’t love you—they love the role you’re playing. Stop playing that role. Show your true colors. Reveal your true self, with all your rough edges.
3. You’re a junkie seeking approval
“Am I doing this right? Am I good enough? Is this okay? Am I a good mother? Am I a good father? Am I a good entrepreneur?”
Blah blah blah blah. Stop. Stop. Stop! Stop it. You’re like a junkie looking for his next fix from the outside. And I’ll let you in on a little secret: you’re never going to get that approval.
Or at least, it’s never enough to fill that gaping hole inside[3]. I have absolutely no idea whose approval you’re actually seeking. Your parents’, who are just muddling through based on their own conditioning? Your partner’s? Complete strangers on social media?
It’s not about what they think. It’s about you doing your best right now, in the moment. And that’s exactly what you’re doing. Do you make mistakes along the way? Yes, of course! That can have all kinds of consequences. Good consequences and bad consequences, so to speak. But then again, who doesn’t make mistakes?
Even Jesus (and let’s be honest, he was the greatest hypnotist of all time—that man had entire tribes buying into his story) once said, “Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.”
So who are you to demand that you be perfect? Making mistakes is part of the game. Stop looking for a pat on the back from someone else and finally give yourself one.
4. You feel guilty when you set boundaries
This is a really persistent one. You know how it is? Someone asks you to a birthday party. You’re actually exhausted, you’ve had a grueling week, and you want nothing more than to lie on the couch with a blanket. Or someone asks you to go to the movies, and you think: I really don’t feel like it at all.
What do you do? You gather all your courage and say, “No, I can’t come after all.” Or, “No, I’m not going.” Way to go! You’ve taken the first step—you’re setting a boundary. Boom.
And then… comes the blow. Immediately afterward, you feel guilty. Your stomach churns, and you lie in bed worrying. Am I being selfish now? Do they still think I’m sweet?
Why do you feel guilty? Because you’re choosing yourself! Because you’re being reminded of that old programming that says you always have to be there for someone else. But hey, wake up: you only have one life. One!
And you can spend that however you like. So stop feeling guilty. There’s absolutely no need for it. It’s a waste of energy.
We have exactly 86,400 seconds per day. And those seconds tick away relentlessly. Every tick is gone, never to return. And when it’s all said and done, you’ll be lying on your deathbed and thinking: If only I had… If only I’d listened to myself. If only I’d said “no” more often. Do you really want that? No. So stop doing that. Just live life to the fullest on your own terms, right now.
5. You’re living on autopilot
You get up. You brush your teeth. You get in the car. You go to work. You do your thing. You come home. You eat. You watch Netflix. You go to bed. And the next day, you do exactly the same thing. It just goes on and on and on. The days fly by, the years rush past you.
And actually… Geez, what on earth are you doing? What are you doing?!
Are you living someone else’s life? Are you simply doing all sorts of things based on your conditioning that don’t really suit you at all? Just because that’s how it’s supposed to be?
Is it because you happened to have studied that subject, or because you’ve been stuck in that bad relationship for ten years, or because that mortgage simply has to be paid?
You’re trapped in a trance—a hypnotic social trance in which you’re sleepwalking toward the end of your life.
Time for the Wake-Up Call
Stop. Stop. Stop. Stop!
While you still can. While you still can, let this article—these words—be an absolute wake-up call for you. Stop it.
And yes, I mean it: end that relationship that’s draining you. Quit that job you drive to every morning with a knot in your stomach. Stop the bullshit.
Now, you shouldn’t go rushing out today to recklessly hand in your resignation letter or pack your bags and kick your partner out onto the street. I don’t want you to end up in some kind of massive crisis right away. But do think about it. Take a moment to really look deep within yourself.
Think about what you want. What do you truly want deep down inside? And not what your partner wants, not what your parents want, not what your boss wants, and certainly not what society wants from you. What is your desire?
If you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten: a life on autopilot, driven by fear, guilt, and the constant craving for approval. You’re hypnotized by your past.
But the key to the prison has been in your own pocket all along. You just have to decide to turn the door handle and walk out.
Did you find this an interesting story, and could you use a reality check like this more often? Then save this article. Bookmark it. Maybe for later, when you’re in danger of getting swept up in the hustle and bustle of daily life again. It’s really handy.
And now: wake up, break free from that conditioning, and go live your own damn life!
Break Free from Your Conditioning
Hypnotherapy helps you break through your conditioning. When you’re deep in that social trance, talking and logical thinking often don’t get you any further. That’s because your conditioning isn’t in your conscious mind, but is deeply stored in your subconscious—where all those old programs run on autopilot.
Hypnotherapy is the ultimate fast track to clearing out that hard drive. By entering a deep state of relaxation and heightened focus (trance), you bypass your brain’s critical filter. You descend directly to the root of the conditioning.
It enables you to neutralize and reprogram that old fear of rejection, those Barbapapa tendencies, and those restrictive patterns from the past all at once. You clear away someone else’s mess, so that your true, authentic self finally has the space to take over again.
It’s not hocus-pocus; it’s simply taking back control of your own mind.
