Christmas stress over: This is how hypnosis helps you relax through the holidays

Christmas stress is a familiar phenomenon that many of us experience, but did you know that psychological stress is considered a major health problem worldwide? We often look forward to the holidays, but at the same time, social obligations and expectations can create tremendous pressure, especially for women who are married.

However, there is good news for those striving for a stress-free Christmas. In this article, we share how you can use hypnosis to get through the holidays calmer and more relaxed.

With the prevalence of stress-related health problems increasing worldwide, and six out of nine studies reporting significant positive effects of hypnosis for stress reduction, we believe this is a valuable approach that you can apply immediately. We explore exactly what hypnosis is, how it works for stress, and give you practical tips for applying it yourself during the busy December month.

Why the holidays can be stressful

For many, the December month symbolizes coziness, but it also brings considerable pressure for many Dutch people. Almost one-third of the Dutch experience Christmas stress, mainly due to the organization of festivities and meeting social expectations.

Social commitments and expectations

For many people, Christmas stress arises from unspoken expectations. There seems to be some sort of unwritten rule that everything must be perfect, from elaborately set tables to the most thoughtful gifts.

Although many people report that togetherness is the most important thing during this period, over one-fifth of the Netherlands experiences the most stress precisely because of this. The pressure to impress (in-laws) is a source of tension for many.

Financial pressure and gift stress

The holiday season causes financial headaches for many Dutch people. Buying gifts is experienced as stressful by many people, with finding the "perfect" gift a challenge for many of the gift givers.

Lack of time for yourself

During the holidays, everything runs differently. Your schedule shifts, you eat at odd times and moments of rest disappear quickly. The pressure to be everywhere at once is a major cause of stress. December is an extremely busy month with many appointments that, while often enjoyable, also take a lot of energy.

Fatigue is therefore a common complaint: Women in particular feel stressed more often than men, especially when planning activities and Christmas dinner. Moreover, women are more likely to cook the Christmas meal themselves.

To experience Christmas without stress, it is important to set timely boundaries and have realistic expectations about what you can handle within the time and energy you have....

What is hypnosis and how does it work for stress?

Hypnosis is often associated with entertainment, but in reality it is a powerful technique that can help reduce Christmas stress. If you are seeking peace of mind during the holidays, hypnosis can be a surprisingly effective tool.

Definition of hypnosis

Hypnosis is an artificially induced trance state characterized by increased susceptibility to suggestion. It is a specific state of consciousness in which you are relaxed and focused on a specific subject. During hypnosis you are in a state between waking and sleeping, which is measurable through brainwave patterns. Important to know: hypnosis is not a therapy in itself, but a tool to achieve therapeutic goals.

How hypnosis affects the brain

Under hypnosis, measurable changes take place in your brain. Research with MRI scans shows that hypnosis is associated with increased functional connectivity in areas such as the parieto-occipital-temporal regions. Moreover, hypnosis decreases activity in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, the part responsible for critical thinking. This explains why under hypnosis you are more open to suggestions.

For stress, hypnosis specifically helps by lowering activity in the amygdala, the brain region responsible for processing stress and anxiety. In addition, hypnosis can reduce the production of stress hormones such as cortisol. This allows your body to relax and recover, perfect for getting through Christmas without stress.

Difference between hypnosis and meditation

Although both techniques promote relaxation, hypnosis and meditation differ fundamentally. Hypnosis is goal-oriented and is often guided by a therapist or self-guided suggestions for behavior change. Meditation, on the other hand, is a form of passive "non-judgmental" observation with no direct therapeutic goal.

The main difference is in the approach: hypnosis works with increased suggestibility and focused interventions, while meditation is all about presence and acceptance. In hypnosis, your critical thinking capacity becomes temporarily less active, while in meditation it remains fully present.

Suggestibility and individual differences

Not everyone responds the same to hypnosis. There are significant individual differences in hypnotizability. Some people are easily hypnotized ("highs") and can even experience hallucinations with simple verbal instructions. The largest group of people fall into the middle category ('moderates'), while a small group are barely hypnotizable ('lows').

Yet there is also a current that claims anyone can go into trance as long as the hypnotherapist is flexible enough to find the right connection.

Scientific evidence for hypnosis in stress reduction

The question you may have: does hypnosis really work in reducing Christmas stress? Scientific research is giving us more and more insight.

Results from systematic reviews

A 2017 systematic review examined nine randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with a total of 365 participants 2]. Six of the nine studies reported significant positive effects of hypnosis for stress reduction compared with control groups [1]. These participants were primarily female medical students between 20 and 25 years of age, although three studies also included older participants between 30 and 42 years of age [3].

Effects on anxiety, mood and relaxation

Moreover, these studies showed specific improvements. Barling and Raine reported significant differences in burnout, anxiety and depression in people who underwent hypnosis [1]. In addition, participants in Cardena's study experienced less stress and better overall health after hypnosis sessions [1].

Remarkably, studies show that hypnosis can measurably reduce stress and anxiety symptoms, both subjectively and in biological markers such as cortisol levels. This makes hypnosis a promising technique for achieving stress-free Christmas.

Apply hypnosis for a stress-free Christmas

Now that you understand how hypnosis works, it's time to discover practical applications that will help you experience a stress-free Christmas.

Self-hypnosis exercises for home

Self-hypnosis is a powerful technique that you can learn on your own. Start with a simple but effective exercise:

  1. Create a peaceful environment without interference
  2. Sit or lie down comfortably and close your eyes
  3. Inhale deeply through your nose three times and exhale slowly through your mouth
  4. Focus on a word such as "rest" and repeat it in your mind
  5. Set an intention such as "I feel calm during the holidays."

Using audio files during the holidays

Audio files make hypnosis accessible to everyone. They offer instant relaxation when Christmas stress increases. Listen to them in a safe place where you can sit or lie quietly (note! : never while driving or operating machinery). For even better results, use headphones.

Tips for incorporating hypnosis into your routine

Daily consistency makes hypnosis more effective. Try to schedule a session before busy times, such as family visits. Also, while shopping for Christmas gifts, put in earbuds with soothing music to reduce stimuli.

When to seek professional help

Consider a professional hypnotherapist if you are experiencing persistent stress symptoms. Look for a certified therapist with experience in stress reduction. A professional session lasts about 90 minutes and often includes an explanation of hypnosis, a deep relaxation session and techniques you can apply at home.

Christmas stress gone with hypnosis

So stress during the Christmas season affects nearly one in three Dutch people, but fortunately hypnosis offers a scientifically based way out. After all, research shows that hypnotic techniques effectively reduce stress by acting directly on brain areas such as the amygdala. Moreover, this method helps lower cortisol levels, allowing your body to recover from stress more quickly.

The holidays need not be synonymous with overwhelming social obligations, financial worries or lack of me-time. Self-hypnosis therefore represents a powerful tool that you can apply immediately when the rush hits. Simple exercises such as breathing calmly and setting positive intentions can make all the difference between a stressful and a relaxing Christmas.

Women in particular, who often experience more pressure during the holidays, can benefit from this technique. Nevertheless, hypnosis works differently for everyone - some are more susceptible to suggestions than others. Therefore, experiment with different approaches such as audio files or guided sessions to discover what works best for you.

We believe that a stress-free Christmas is within reach if you allow yourself to explore new relaxation techniques. In this regard, hypnosis does not offer a panacea, but rather a proven effective method that will help you navigate the holiday season more consciously and calmly. So this December, take time to think of yourself and use hypnosis as your ally against Christmas stress.
