Money is important to live on, but of course you are not meant to live to work so that you have money. Rather, you work to live with the money you earn. Career counseling can help you find the job that suits you. In this blog I will go into more detail about what career counseling is, what a counselor does and how hypnosis can help people in their search for a great job.
What is career coaching?
A career counselor helps you make career choices. For example, many students can use career counseling if they don't really know what to look for yet.
But even if you already have a job but find that it's not quite it, you can still use a career counselor to help you figure out where your interests lie in terms of the work that suits you and how it relates to your qualities.
In the process, a career counselor can help you give meaning to your life through your work[1]. There are multiple ways to do this, of course, but your work plays a big role in this.
What does a career counselor do?
A career counselor does several things. First, a career counselor can help you transition from school life to work life[2]. It's a little different when everything you do is important and not just the exam counts.
Identifying your qualities and helping you find work is what a career counselor does. In the process, this counselor can also give you insights into the world of work that you may not have had before.
This can be done in a variety of ways.
A career counselor can help you shape your life[3]. A life that suits you with a work environment that suits you. Work that helps you find the work-life balance you want to have.
There are several techniques a career counselor can use to help you gain insights into the work that suits you and how to get it done.
Career counselors may even have knowledge of cognitive behavioral therapy, gestalt therapy, family therapy, psychoanalysis and hypnotherapy to help you get a career that suits you[4]. Depending on the time in your life and the problems for which you seek help from a career counselor, it may sometimes be necessary to use these techniques.
Often you may not realize that you are having some sort of therapeutic conversation with a career counselor, but so these techniques can be used during an appointment with your counselor.
Building self-confidence , for example, is important when looking for a new job so that you also have the confidence that you can get that dream job.
Techniques to help people find their dream jobs
As mentioned, there are many techniques that can help you find your dream job. What is special is that career counseling can be about more than just the career. After all, you often work at least 1/3rd of your time and often half of your waking hours. So it's a big part of your life. Sometimes life coaching can become an important part of career counseling[5].
Therefore, there are techniques to use that are useful for your work, but can be equally useful for your personal life.
Life Story
One technique is to use your life story as a tool to figure out what to do in the event of a change. A career counselor can interview you to give you insights about how your life story helps you take the next step in your career. This can help you realize that you have already accomplished and done a lot, and you will take that knowledge and experience into your next work.
The career counselor can also encourage you to write down your life story to gain insights into your own abilities and how this already gives you everything you need to handle the future.
In addition, you can also share 3 life events or stories of things you experienced from when you were between 3 and 8 years old. This can help you recognize certain life themes. This can give you insights into what is important to you and what issues recur repeatedly in your life. This can help you see what kind of job suits you best.
Inspiration
You can also be asked about your inspirations , such as what people you use as role models, what books you like, what movies you watch and whether you have mottos you want to live by.
These insights can also say something about themes you care about and how you want to live your life (source 3).
NLP (Neuro-linguistic programming)
NLP is also increasingly being used by career counselors. For example, it can be used to reframe your problems with work and to look at them in a different way[6].
Your brain is programmed with language, so to speak, to conceive of your job search that suits you in a different way. This can help you apply for jobs or develop yourself with more peace of mind and less stress so that your chances of getting your dream job increase.
Hypnosis
Hypnosis combined with cognitive behavioral therapy can be used to boost your self-confidence[7] during career counseling.
In addition, life story insights and inspiration can be used in multiple hypnosis techniques[8]. Ericksonian hypnotherapy uses symbols and metaphors, for example, to help people solve certain problems.
Also, these techniques can also be used while you are simply in conversation, although they may not work as powerfully as when you are first consciously brought into hypnosis.
Progression
Progression is a hypnosis technique that helps you visualize and achieve your ideal future. Initially, the expert helps you visualize what your life will look like, say, a year from now. You have your ideal job, for example. This gives you a certain feeling. You do certain things and you look a certain way.
You then visualize in reverse order how to get to that point. You take a step back each time, so to speak, to the moment in the chair with the career coach who performs this technique with you.
Indeed, this gives you the confidence and a clear plan that you can design your life the way you want and that it is achievable.
You will also learn this technique in one of the HIN's advanced training courses. It is an advanced technique for hypnosis specialists.
Breaking through blockages
Sometimes you can also go to a career specialist because you find that you keep getting blocked at a certain point in your work life. For example, if you have worked somewhere for a few years you quit. Keeping a job longer than 2 years, for example, doesn't work out, because then you quit .
This may feel a little awkward at some point. Or you find that you keep not daring to apply for a certain position, but you actually want to.
In that case, a career counselor can also help you figure out what it is that is holding you back. The aforementioned techniques of NLP and life storytelling can help.
In addition, the regression technique allows you to zoom in a little deeper on such a moment in your childhood. In fact, with regression you can go back in your mind to the first moment when you blocked yourself in the same way you do now with your work. The first moment when a belief arose that you were not good enough or that there was some other reason why you would not do something.
Next, not only are you going to name this moment, but in your mind you are going to reinterpret that moment. The counselor who knows this hypnosis technique helps you with this. For example, you can empathize with other people or, for example, have your adult self talk to your younger self about the situation and how now everything is different and you get to take your chances.
This can do a lot to remove and change unconscious blockages.
So a career counselor can initially help you determine what work you might enjoy and how to find it. In addition, there are techniques that can help you gain certain insights and confidence that you can achieve your business goals.
Hypnosis can play a role in this. This can be with conversational hypnosis as well as hypnosis where you are consciously induced and perform techniques such as regression and progression to move forward in your work life.
