6 traits to be a successful hypnotherapist

At Hypnosis Institute Netherlands, we don't just help people with problems, we mainly help people who want to become hypnotists. We have trainings for beginners and for advanced practitioners. So whether you are already a psychologist and want to expand your treatment methods or if you just want to apply hypnosis as a coach to help your clients, we are here for you.

However, bringing someone under hypnosis does not immediately mean that your practice will be a success. Therefore, I have listed a few traits that will ensure you become a successful hypnotherapist.

Feature 1: Being Proactive

Having your own practice makes you an entrepreneur, and to make your business a success you need to take steps. Have you landed your first client? Then ask for a review right away, especially if it went well. A client experience is really super valuable because it convinces most other people whether or not to trust you with their problems.

Do something about your marketing, too. For example, post on your social media to spread the word about your practice and showcase the positive aspects of hypnosis.

Make sure you stay healthy yourself, too. Having your own practice can cause stress especially in the beginning because, for example, you don't yet have the income you need to live normally. Therefore, also stay very conscious of your own health, both mental and physical.

Feature 2: Start with the goal

If you know what your goal is, or just your client's goal, you can figure out the steps toward it as well.

Suppose you have a client who suffers from a lack of self-confidence and wants more than anything to solve it. Then ask that person what goal they have for which they need the piece of self-confidence again.

For example, ask about practical problems caused by lack of self-confidence. For example, perhaps it is difficult to relax properly on a date causing the love of his/her life to pass him/her by.

In that case, for example, you can give suggestions that will help them gain confidence in their inner strength and attractiveness, such as:

"If you notice you are tense during the date take a few breaths and consciously relax your muscles. Put a smile on your face and you will see the tension dissipate."

As the tension wears off, they are already likely to get a nicer date which in turn is good for self-confidence. By keeping your client's goals in mind, you can give them hypnotic suggestions that fit their goals and problems.

Feature 3: Don't do everything at once

This seems contradictory to the first feature, but everyone knows you can't do everything at once. You end up having a to-do list that actually allows you to complete tasks separately in an effective order.

Do you have super-motivated clients who want to make their lives a success and therefore jump from one thing to another and never seem to finish tasks because they are already starting something new?

Or they are very busy with their work in mind when they are not working, but at work they are busy with other things again.

In this case, it is important to help your client find out if there is an underlying problem why it is difficult to focus on 1 task and live in the here and now.

For example, this may be related to beliefs about work. In that case, you can change the importance of work through suggestions, such as:

"Work is an important part of your life and gives your life a form of meaning."

"You don't have to do everything by yourself and are allowed to ask for help to get tasks done," he says.

"You can say no."

Sometimes a post-hypnotic suggestion is also helpful especially when people are so busy at work that they become overworked or in danger of burnout.

"When someone at work offers to help you, you smile and say Yes, because you know you have great colleagues you can build on."

By this suggestion, they are less likely to fall into the trap of always doing everything on their own, when doing so can get them into trouble.

Feature 4: Understand the other person so they understand you

Listen carefully to your clients and also try to empathize with their situation and emotions. Having empathic understanding about their problems will help you get to the bottom of the problem.

Once you understand what emotions are playing a role in the problem, you can use those emotions to solve the problem. This can be done with both positive and negative emotions.

In doing so, understanding the situation helps to come up with suggestions that will largely solve the problem at 1 time. If there is no understanding of the suggestions you give, this can cause your client to not be sufficiently open to the suggestion.

This is another reason why the suggestions on this site are only examples and people with problems are always encouraged to also see a therapist to get suggestions that address their beliefs about the problem.

Only when the therapist understands the client can the client understand and use the hypnotist's techniques.

By listening carefully, you often give people hope. Just the peace and space you give your client to talk about the problems can give a sense of relief, and this also makes the relaxation needed for effective hypnosis more present.

Feature 5: Collaboration

Hypnosis is not something you do on your own. You must ultimately work with your client to help him/her get to a solution. By working together, even with other hypnotherapists to learn from each other, you often achieve better results than on your own.

With a client, this works the same way.

After all, you don't solve your client's problems; this is something your client ultimately does himself with your help.

By realizing that you help your client but he/she really has to continue doing it on his/her own you also ensure a better collaboration. You become the person who helps him open the lock to qualities your client didn't know he/she had.

  • You help them find their own tools that they've had behind the figurative lock and key all along, and you make sure the key fits.
  • You will help clients with how they feel, think, behave, move on and heal.

By listening carefully to your client and learning from them, you can make sure they learn something from you, too.

Feature 6: Stay sharp

As mentioned, the Hypnosis Institute Netherlands offers training for beginners and for advanced practitioners. This is for good reason. You can develop yourself up to three levels at the training institute. This ensures that your knowledge about hypnosis remains up to date and that you are well versed in the material with which you help your clients.

Therefore, read news and books about hypnosis regularly.

By continuing to learn, you will continue to grow.

In addition, it is very important to keep taking care of yourself so that you stay sharp and absorb new information well.

Therefore, eat healthy foods that help keep your brain and body healthy. A handful of nuts daily, at least 2 pieces of fruit and 2 servings of vegetables will do wonders for you.

Connect with other hypnotherapists, or people learning more about this. This way, you reduce the chance of isolation and continue to receive relevant information.

In addition to looking at the benefits of hypnosis, explore other mental techniques you and your clients can use. NLP (neuro linguistic programming), for example, is one such technique. The book Break Free also discusses many other techniques and you will literally get to work with them.

Use self-hypnosis. Of course, you can't tell every client to use self-hypnosis and then do nothing with it. By also using self-hypnosis daily, you ensure peace and regularity. In doing so, it allows you to quickly identify and address your own problems. It also helps you relax.

The first and last tips are especially important for you personally to make your practice a success. Being proactive and continuing to learn and apply hypnosis will help you take the right steps. The other traits are important for you to be the best hypnotherapist for your client. Keep listening, work collaboratively, set goals and make sure everything stays clear.
