Strengthening inner strength: 9 tips

Being in your power, having inner strength, having a strong personality, knowing where you stand. When you have inner strength, you stand strong and this allows you to choose what you want in life. It ensures that you can deal with unexpected setbacks on your path.

It is a dynamic ability that grows as you gain more life experience and become more aware of your inner world.

In this blog, get tips on strengthening your inner power.

What is inner strength?

But what exactly is inner strength? Inner strength is really about your mental, emotional, and spiritual resilience. It enables you to cope with stressful situations in your life and to make the right choices for yourself when a situation calls for it.

You are goal-oriented, stay calm when things get tough, and serve as a source of support for many people around you.

There are a variety of factors that contribute to inner strength, such as:

  1. Emotional Resilience
  2. Self-Awareness
  3. Self Confidence
  4. Perseverance
  5. Inner peace
  6. Sense.

This also gives us an immediate entry point to provide helpful tips to strengthen your inner power.

Tip 1: Strengthen emotional resilience with mindfulness

Emotions are interesting because they’re often a result of your thoughts and physical sensations. Just think about how a stomachache doesn’t just make you feel “bad,” but also affects your emotions. You might suddenly feel much more anxious about your health, for example.

One way to strengthen your emotional resilience is through mindfulness. By practicing mindfulness, you ensure that your attention remains in the here and now and that you are mindful of how your environment, as well as your own body and thoughts, influence your emotions. By keeping this in mind, you ensure that nothing exerts more influence than is reasonable, allowing you to experience a more appropriate level of emotion in response to a particular event.

This often helps you cope better with stress and gives you more inner peace[1].

Tip 2: Improve self-awareness with self-hypnosis

How can you know what the right steps are for you if you don’t know yourself well? Why do you do what you do? When do you take action, and when do you find yourself procrastinating? What values drive you to do what you do? And what beliefs shape your view of the world and determine when you do or don’t do something?

These types of questions can be answered during a hypnosis session, which is particularly helpful if you find that you are not moving forward in your life or during self-hypnosis.

The state of hypnosis helps anyway to be more aware of yourself (your body and thoughts) and can also change the way you perceive your environment. It has a direct effect on connections in your brain[2].

Combining the hypnotic state with hypnotherapy can provide you with many insights.

Regression, for example, is a technique that can show you what events in your life affect choices you make as an adult and problems you may then experience. Fortunately, this technique also directly helps remove limiting beliefs.

Tip 3: Improve self-confidence with exercise

There are many ways to improve your self-confidence. For example, exercising is one way to feel your body getting stronger, which in turn has the psychological effect of making you feel good about yourself.

Research on adults also shows that people who exercise regularly have better self-confidence than adults who have sedentary lifestyles[3].

Tip 4: Improve self-confidence with hypnosis

There’s also a lot you can do mentally to boost your self-confidence. At the Hypnosis Institute Netherlands, for example, we use the “magic mirror” technique. This technique gradually helps you realize that you are an awesome person—that you are worthy and that you can be proud of everything you’ve achieved, even the little things.

This technique is super for empowering people.

Tip 5: Improve perseverance, your why

Perseverance actually hints at willpower, but willpower is finite. Doing something because you "have to" do it is harder than doing something because you "want" to do it because you like it.

Therefore, it is important to find out what your motivation is to get something done.

"Why do I want to do this?" is a question you can ask yourself.

And you can repeat that why question on every answer, to really get to the heart of your motivation.

Tip 6: Improve perseverance with pain

What is good to know is that people are often motivated by pain, or by pleasure. Unfortunately, most people are motivated by pain.

This is why losing weight is sometimes so difficult and why people fall back into a yo-yo cycle. When they feel too heavy, it feels like pain they don’t want, and that motivates them to stop snacking and exercise more. But once they’re slim, that pain is gone, so they exercise a little less intensely and snack a little more, causing them to gain weight again and only take action once they’re too heavy.

Fortunately, you can work with that pain. With hypnotherapy, for example, when quitting smoking, the “unpleasant feelings”that arise every time you light a cigarette are addressed. You can do this with anything you want to stop doing. That way, you’ll need less willpower to, for example, stop snacking or do other things you no longer want to do.

Tip 7: Improve perseverance with fun

Enhancing fun is also a great way to improve your perseverance. After all, if you have a clear picture of where you want to go and what your life will look like. If this picture is totally awesome and is something that makes you completely happy.

Then you also want to take the steps necessary to achieve that life. Then you believe in it and you don't let anything distract you from your goal.

In this context, setting clear, enjoyable, or meaningful goals can help you maintain your perseverance more easily. When applied correctly, you don’t even need willpower, because it takes no effort to “want” something.

Sometimes you also need perseverance, especially when you’re in a difficult situation, such as when you’re seriously ill. Research shows that people with cancer can benefit from hypnosis, as it can alter their perception of pain and because the techniques can help maintain the perseverance needed to endure difficult treatments[4]. Afterward, they can once again enjoy life.

Tip 8: Have inner peace through your circle of influence

It is what it is. Being aware of things you can and cannot influence, and then only giving energy to things you can influence, creates an awful lot of inner peace.

You can then more easily maintain composure in difficult circumstances, because you have a better understanding of what actions you can take yourself, rather than remaining passive or doing what other people are doing.

Tip 9: Choose meaning

The Hypnosis Institute Netherlands exists because I want to help people feel good about themselves. It is also necessary, because mental health care suffers from appalling waiting times and hypnosis is then a good alternative to make use of when you are so in the shit that you still want to do something.

It's all too common for hypnotherapists to find that people have already tried everything, then give hypnosis a shot, and then it's solved.

And since I soon found out that I can't help everyone as a hypnotherapist, I was left with no choice but to train hypnotherapists to help as many people as possible that way.

This may not be something that brings immediate pleasure, but it does provide a great deal of satisfaction. It’s truly a source of meaning, and it gives me the feeling that my life has a purpose.

If you can also think of a goal for yourself, one where you help other people or animals, so that you feel there is "meaning," this will help you in your inner strength.

You know you're doing what it takes to make the world a better place and that's why you go with it.

Again, meaning makes sure you don't get distracted from your goals and that when setbacks occur, you have the inner strength to keep going.
