Self-Healing: Hypnosis for its own sake

Recently, I fainted at the hairdresser's. So it was time to go to the doctor. While I fully believe in the power of hypnosis, it is always wise to see a doctor. At the very least, you want to know what you are going to use the power of hypnosis for.

Not listening to a doctor at all is also not smart. But if your doctor can't find anything, it's time to look at other ways to heal yourself.

My doctor did find something, namely an accelerated thyroid. To resolve this, I sought alternative medicine. I started working with acupuncture and hypnotherapy.

And now my thyroid is acting normal again.

The doctor gave me 3 options, namely:

  1. Taking out the thyroid and then having to continue living with medication.
  2. Using radioactive iodine to destroy the thyroid and then having to live on with medication.
  3. Or use medication anyway.

If you know me, you already know that I kept looking, and so I ended up with hypnotherapy (of course) and acupuncture, and now my thyroid is functioning normally again. In the case of a thyroid issue, it’s likely related to how you express yourself. Problems in the throat are often related to communication. In any case, the latest medical test came back normal.

This doesn't mean that medication is bad. If it helps then it helps, but it does show that there is self-healing potential in me (and probably in you).

You Heal.

You do this on your own, but with some help. That help can come in the form of medication , treatment from a doctor, or an alternative practitioner.

Research also shows that I am not the only one who has had alternative medicine help for accelerated thyroid.

For example, a case study shows that a 42-year-old woman also used acupuncture to treat her accelerated thyroid, which was also effective[1].

A meta review of 29 clinical studies found that acupuncture on its own and along with other therapy also helps normalize values that say something about thyroid function[2].

Focused self-healing

It is helpful, however, if you get started with self-healing that you see a doctor first and that you do so together with your doctor. We all know the stories of people who wanted to cure cancer completely alternatively, which then failed.

CAUTION: Always see a doctor to investigate problems. Review the options you have and make wise decisions about the degree of self-healing you want to engage in and to what extent you want to rely on medical treatments.

My problem isn’t cancer either, and people I’ve helped who were suffering from cancer still had to undergo surgery and required medical interventions to recover. In cases like that, hypnosis is something that supports the treatment, but it is certainly not a substitute for it.

But by going to a doctor, you can look for more focused ways of self-healing.

For example, you can explore whether certain emotions are causing physical symptoms. Research shows that emotions such as anxiety and stress can be the cause of thyroid problems, and that treating anxiety and stress also plays a role in helping people with these symptoms feel better.

Even if they have undergone the medical solution of thyroid removal or radioactive busting and are on medication for this[3].

So even then, there is often a mental task for yourself to apply self-healing.

So you could then, like me, start by improving your emotions first, and if that's all right, you can always still take the medication if you have a problem that is not acutely life-threatening.

That way, at least you won't have to deal with possible side effects of medical treatment.

Self-healing ability

In the process, we all have self-healing abilities, and for doctors, this is also important.

Researchers also refer to people with self-healing abilities as having certain traits. The idea is that with good mental health, you also get good physical health.

Characteristics of people with this benefit are:

  1. Emotionally Balanced.
  2. Alert.
  3. Sympathetic.
  4. Enthusiast.
  5. Conscientious[4].

In doing so, these are often people that other people enjoy being around. People with these skills often live longer and are healthier longer than people with mental problems.

Techniques to promote self-healing

In addition to working on these traits, there are also more practical steps you can take to promote self-healing.

Visualizations, for example, often play a role when it comes to self-healing. With visualizations, you can help yourself overcome certain difficulties[5].

Also in my recovery, visualizations focusing on emotions and the thyroid itself have done a lot to heal myself again.

For people suffering from chronic conditions, such as pain or arthritis, self-healing often plays an important role in their treatment. Scientists even believe that alternative medicine practitioners and doctors should work together to treat patients in the field of musculoskeletal medicine.

  1. For example, relaxation exercises can do a lot for normalizing the nervous system.
  2. Reducing mental stress with mental or psychological interventions can reduce muscle tension, which works well against pain.
  3. Influencing your immune system through your behavior—such as by eating healthier and relaxing more—also helps reduce certain problems.

These steps can be incredibly helpful for self-healing in some conditions[6].

A nice benefit of training in self-healing is that it also helps you develop more self-compassion and supports people during their recovery from (skin) cancer[7].

Hypnotherapy for self-healing

Hypnotherapy has also been studied for improving self-healing ability. For example, research on people who suffered from broken bones shows that people who received hypnotherapy in addition to standard treatment had well-functioning bones and muscles restored faster than people who did not have hypnotherapy in addition to standard treatment[8].

The study also included photos of the bone fractures, and by the sixth week, a clear difference could be seen in the photos. By the ninth week, people were also able to use their ankles better if they had received hypnotherapy than those who recovered without hypnosis.

But how does that work?

As mentioned, it is helpful if you know what you want to heal. It doesn't matter if it's broken bones, recovery from cancer treatment or an accelerated thyroid.

After all, when you know what you want to heal, you know what to focus on .

Visualizations

In that focus, visualizations can indeed play an important role. For example, I visualized how my thyroid would work a little slower again. People with broken bones can visualize how the bones will regain proper density and how their lower legs can bear their weight properly again.

You can make the visualization as big or small as you want, but it is helpful if it is focused on what you have to heal.

A hypnotherapist can help people with this. Even for whiplash symptoms, visualizations can lead to a breakthrough in recovery.

During visualization, you can also experiment with symbols and colors. In cases of chronic illnesses or pain, colors are often used to visualize the body as “clean”—free from influences that cause pain and inflammation.

If something needs healing, you can visualize your body, or the part of your body that needs healing, being filled with a color that promotes healing.

Eliminate Stress

Stress can often be a cause of physical problems, and removing the stress can then do much to resolve the physical problems.

Your beliefs often determine the amount of stress you experience in the rest of your life. This is because you have ideas about how things “should” be or how you “should” act. And sometimes it’s very difficult to live up to those expectations, or the world around you is far removed from how things “should” be—which creates that uncomfortable feeling of stress.

In that case, it's helpful to check those beliefs. Your unconscious rules or thoughts about how things "should" be.

This is something a hypnotherapist helps with. Because very often those feelings come from unconscious rules that you created during childhood, but never thought about otherwise.

Through regression, a hypnotherapist can help people identify beliefs that cause stress. There are then various techniques that can be used to address that moment or that belief, ensuring that the belief is transformed into something that actually helps you[9].

Something that will make you stop feeling stress, or make you dare to take steps that will cause you to experience less stress. Like stating your boundaries in relationships or at work.
