Hypnotherapy is a mental treatment that is becoming increasingly common. For many psychologists, it is part of the daily treatment of clients. There are even therapists who only use hypnosis because it often leads to successful treatment. However, taking a course in hypnotherapy does not make you a successful practitioner. You will know how to apply all the ins and outs of your craft, but unfortunately that does not guarantee a bulging client base.
To help you become a successful hypnotherapist, in this blog I address the question of whether you need to have an expertise.
What can hypnotherapy be used for?
Hypnosis and hypnotherapy can be used for a variety of purposes. Generally, hypnosis is used to overcome fears and reduce pain , but that's not the only thing it's good for.
Even in hospitals, hypnosis is now being used to support patients with wound healing. This starts for some people even before they are on the operating table .
So hypnosis has long since ceased to be something that only happens in locations where tarot cards are also laid. It is a method that is scientifically proven to work to solve all kinds of problems, such as:
- Fear of the dentist
- Supporting depression treatment
- Strengthening self-confidence
- Overcoming addictions
- Encouraging people to live a healthy lifestyle
- Reducing stress
- Improve ability to concentrate
- Supporting athletes
- And then much more...
Therefore, it is not surprising that as a hypnotherapist you are enticed to help people with all kinds of problems, but how good is this for your practice? Will it make you the best hypnotherapist you can be?
To ensure that your practice is a successful one with satisfied clients who are truly helped with their problem, it may be a good idea to specialize in solving certain problems.
So how do you find the best specialization? Should you just specialize in what is in most demand?
This answer is different for everyone. To know whether you need to specialize and in what you can take a few steps.
Step 1: Jump into the deep end first
Every business owner has to start somewhere, whether you are a hypnotherapist or another profession. After you've completed the training required to become a hypnotherapist, it's time to take that step and open your own practice.
If you just start, chances are your first clients will be found through-via. As a result, you may be presented with all sorts of different problems from clients that they would like to see solved.
Because of the variety of problems you will work with, at some point you will notice which complaints you find interesting to solve.
You will first develop yourself as a hypnotherapist in general and gain your own style in applying hypnotherapy.
The way you discovered hypnosis can also have a lot of influence on the specialty you tend toward.
Learn from your mistakes
Thereby, as a beginner, you will make mistakes; everyone makes mistakes from time to time. Just like when you just got your driver's license, the real work comes when you start driving. These are the moments when you learn more.
If you make a mistake, this may be a time when you give up. But someone who quits will never have a successful practice. Reflect on where you have failed or fallen short, what would...
Think about the mistake you made, what would you do differently if you found yourself in such a situation again?
Is there anything you actually need additional teaching for? Like regression therapy to prevent false memories? A better way of inducing hypnosis?
By learning from your mistakes, you hone your knowledge so you can help people even better in the future.
There are even therapists who record their sessions and then watch the session back. With this, they evaluate themselves to further perfect their hypnosis methods.
Step 2: Talk to hypnotherapists who are already successful
This can be a difficult step, but it certainly doesn't have to be. There are plenty of networking opportunities to talk to other successful therapists. By listening to their story and journey to becoming a hypnotherapist, you can learn an awful lot.
Ask questions
For example, you will learn what not to do above all else and what steps you can take.
- How do you deal with difficult clients?
- When do you refer someone to a psychiatrist or doctor if you think the problem has a physical cause or that it is not within your power to solve it?
- How do you encourage clients to do their homework?
- How do you connect with clients before therapy?
Learn from their mistakes
Also talk to them about the mistakes they have made and what they do to avoid that mistake in the future. How do they initially react to a mistake and turn it into something positive?
Do they have a specialty?
Ask the other hypnotherapist if they have a specialty that has made them successful and what other steps they are taking to find clients.
Does this consist of networking or just a good online presence?
Step 3: Research which complaints you solve and enjoy solving best
If you choose a specialty, you can communicate very specifically to people what you can help them with. Your prominence in that specialty can then be the deciding factor as to why people go to you rather than someone who offers "of everything" hypnotherapy.
Because of the specialty, some may also choose to charge higher rates, but that's a choice you have to make for yourself. First, you need to get that schedule filled.
So how do you know which specialty suits you?
Do you get into kind of hypnosis yourself while giving therapy and that everything automatically goes well? That's one way to find out that this is a specialty that suits you. You get into the flow with certain types of complaints and know how to combine techniques to solve them well with the client to address the problem.
You become familiar with those techniques and can use them with the client to lead the session to a good and successful conclusion.
How do you let go of needing to be able to do everything?
Of course, you can also tell yourself that you should be able to solve any problem with hypnotherapy, but isn't that super stressful? To be good at everything?
Doesn't it give much more peace of mind if you pick certain problems in which you want to excel? So that people don't need five sessions, but only three? Don't you help your clients the most in the end?
In addition, you also help yourself have more focus on the areas you want to specialize in.
Even as a hypnotherapist, you are often an entrepreneur, and entrepreneurship can be stressful. Therefore, do yourself and your clients a favor to choose a specialty when you have steps 1, 2 and the first parts of step 3 well mapped out.
Step 4: Communicate your specialty
Running a successful practice as a hypnotherapist means gaining trust from your clients. To gain this trust, it is important to have good communication, both in conversations and through advertising materials.
For example, it is important to communicate your specialty on your website. Your specialties should not be missing on business cards either. This is very important if you go to a lot of networking meetings and give your business card to people with whom you have had a conversation, in which you have of course mentioned your specialty very casually but clearly.
Client references are vital to the success of your business. Do you know that? That you check references before you buy something? People looking for a hypnotherapist will do the same. Is it difficult for you to get references because the problems you solve are perceived by people as very private? Then you can also share your success rate.
If you are just opening your own practice, it may be helpful to offer as wide a range of solutions as possible so that you can build a large client base. Choosing a specialization and immersing yourself in it takes time.
Ultimately, it remains your own choice whether or not to specialize.
