Seeing things differently: Seeing things differently

How do you see things before you and how can you look at certain issues or problems differently? One thing that is interesting is that when you are small you often decide what something is and what it exists for[1]. Once you've decided that and think that's right you usually don't double check.

If you want to look at something differently, now is the time to do so anyway

Redefining your goals

You can look at certain issues and problems differently by, for example, reformulating the goals that motivate your actions[2].

Many entrepreneurs set goals such as: this year I want to achieve X sales. These are goals that depend very much on external factors. Because of this, for example, at an event you may look at the other guests as "potential customers," that is not always great for actually getting customers or having an enjoyable experience at such an event.

You can then also reformulate your goals as an entrepreneur. Instead of revenue goals, you can have other goals such as: I want to know about as many people as possible and what interests they have outside of work.

This causes you to look differently at other people at the event, namely, for example, as fellow human beings with particular jobs and hobbies. The conversations you will have because of this will also be much more casual and then you can build a real bond.

Even if it is not about your work, you can change goals to change your outlook on a particular problem.

Instead of being limited to a maximum of 1,500 calories, you can, for example, eat three times a day—as long as you eat healthily. This way, you’ll likely still stay under 1,500 calories, but it feels less restrictive.

Instead of having to take 10,000 steps every day, you can go for a walk in nature every day. Even then, you’ll likely still take enough steps to meet your exercise goals, but you’ll view that exercise differently .

Reviewing the meaning of what you see

Sometimes it is also helpful to let go of the meaning of what you see and give it meaning again.

For example, you can start very simply by looking at a table differently.

You can then say to yourself, "I want nothing more than to see this table different."

You may wonder why you can say On its own, this probably doesn't matter much, but what is on its own? You are probably surrounded by all kinds of things and you will find, that when you can see one thing differently, you can see everything differently.

The light you see in one is the same light you see in another.

When you say to yourself that you want to see the table differently you first have to let go of all the ideas you have about the table. You then begin to open your mind back up to what it is and what it is for.

You then don't define the table based on the past. Rather, you ask what it is instead of telling what it is.

You then don't tie the meaning to your experiences with the table, nor do you limit what it serves with your own thoughts.

Many people are unwilling to question what they have already given meaning to. But this exercise will help you do just that. Say, "I want nothing more than to see this table differently." And you commit yourself by seeing. It doesn't exclude anything else. It is a commitment that applies to the table and to something else.

You might even get a new vision from the table. That table has something beautiful, pure and valuable to show you. Full of happiness and hope. This is what the table shows you with the energy of the universe.

By using the table to apply the idea of seeing things differently, of looking at things differently, you are essentially asking to see the intent of the universe.

You can do this exercise with any objects you see. You then allow the object to reveal its intent to you instead of you determining what the intent of the item is.

Exercise:

You can do the following exercise six times during the day for two minutes.

You sit down and name things you see. In doing so, you say:

"I would like nothing more than to see this ... (chair, table, laptop, pencil, mug) different."

Things you seek out randomly and you start to be genuinely open to what it is. Because of that randomness, you also recognize that the objects have equal value.

Then you let go of the thoughts of whatever that table, or whatever object you are working on, is and allow new thoughts to emerge within you. As if the object is sending those new meanings to you.

There is no rush.

You will find it easier to look at objects differently, and perhaps even problems or people as a result.

Looking at something from a different angle

Another thing people often want to see differently is a particular event in their lives. Some events can cause a lot of stress, and looking at certain events differently can also ensure that it no longer causes stress at all.

Hypnotherapy is actually a way to look at certain things differently, which helps against stress, among other things[3].

There are many techniques through which hypnotherapy can help you look at problems or events differently.

Regression is a technique that can be used when you find that certain events cause you a lot of stress. Your vision of how to react then is no longer working for you.

Through regression, you go back to the very first moment when you felt you had to approach something in a certain way. This is often an event from your childhood. At that moment, you assigned meaning to that specific event; it shaped a belief about how life works and how you should function within it.

Like the table, you've never double-checked that the meaning you give to certain behaviors or events is correct. With regression, you start to do that, and one of the ways you do that is that in that moment, you start to empathize with other people who were there.

You’ll start to view the event from a different perspective. This will allow you to realize, with your current knowledge, that as a child you didn’t fully understand that moment . For example: that bully (if that was the problem) wasn’t just a mean person, but also a child with issues that he or she was taking out on you at that moment.

For example: that tutor who said it would never work out with you, who was actually fed up with his/her own life and wasn't having her day.

These kinds of insights can help you let go of thoughts that cause you stress more easily and even stop automatically engaging in certain behaviors triggered by stressful events. As a result, you may suddenly find it easier to set boundaries, prioritize your own needs, or become more sociable. All this simply by looking at your interpretation of how things “should” be in a different light.

Looking differently through suggestions

After such a regression, you may also receive suggestions or affirmations that help you look at certain things differently. This is to help you firmly hold onto your new insights, so you don’t fall back into old, unhelpful behaviors or your old way of seeing things.

These may include suggestions such as:

"If you don't know what the goal is, look at the effect."

"I get to make my own meaning in the world."

"I decide what should and shouldn't be done."

These are just examples. Depending on your beliefs and what you want to look at differently, you may get other suggestions from your hypnotherapist.
