Changing jobs with the help of hypnosis
To participants of the Break Free seminar, I always ask what effect it had. I was very impressed with a woman who sought and had found a new employer after 12 years. She had remained herself and had stood up for herself during salary negotiations. When this happens to participants, it makes me so proud!

Guts needed to find new employer
To take a new step in your life sometimes you have to be able to say, "just do it," but that is easier said than done. To actually do it you sometimes need a dose of courage.
If you lack courage, you often lack confidence that you can do something—that you can, so to speak, “get away with it.” You’ll be surprised at how many things you can accomplish if you boost that confidence and just go for it.
Boosting confidence that you can just do something is something hypnosis can help you with. This can be done, for example, through a guided visualization in which you do what you want to do but don't currently have enough courage to do.
For example, if you want to change jobs but find it exciting to make contact with a new employer, guided visualization can help you build this confidence. Seeing before you how you will do something also gives you more confidence that you can do something and this increases the likelihood that you will do it.
If you can't imagine how to connect with a new employer right now, a guided visualization will help you with this.
Being yourself in the conversations
To find the right personnel for a particular job, employers find it important to choose people who are themselves during the interview. If you pretend to be different than you are, this can still come across as fake and phony, preventing you from finding a new job.
However, being yourself isn’t something that comes naturally to everyone. For example, you might struggle with your identity, social anxiety, fear of failure, self-esteem, or other issues related to self-confidence.
To be yourself, it’s important to examine the beliefs that are holding you back from being who you are. Perhaps you don’t feel “normal” enough and are therefore trying to be as “normal” as possible.
You can change those beliefs with hypnotic suggestions. You get these initially from a hypnotherapist, and you can often practice them at home afterwards with self-hypnosis. Often you get an mp3 file to take home, but you can also repeat them aloud yourself.
Self-hypnosis is something you can learn during a workshop, and your hypnotherapist will also explain how it works and practice with you. Then when you are under hypnosis repeat positive suggestions, such as:
"I am more fun when I am myself."
"I am worth really getting to know."
"Everyone is normal, so am I."
Negotiating well
When finding a new job, it is important to also negotiate well for your new salary. For this, you need to be strong in your position because, of course, you don't want to be underpaid.
To negotiate a good salary, the first thing you can do is do preliminary research on what is common in your field and with the number of years of experience you have. Then you will at least know what the approximate minimum should be.
After that, it is important to properly assess your self-esteem and strengthen it if necessary.
Especially if you feel you are not earning the average amount in your industry with your work experience, it is important to boost your self-esteem.
Self-esteem depends on the confidence you have that you can do your job. There are a number of exercises you can do to strengthen your self-esteem. Guided visualization, such as with guts, is an exercise you can do in this regard with hypnosis.
Make a list of things you have accomplished
Another exercise is to make a list of all the things you have accomplished in life, both business and personal. For example:
- Hosting a party (such as a birthday party).
- High School Diploma.
- Training completion.
- Resolve a conflict (such as arguing with neighbors over one thing or another).
- Taking a workshop.
- Completing a course.
- Etc. etc.
By making such a list, you remind yourself how great you actually are, and this can already increase your self-esteem considerably in your subconscious.
Take a refresher course
Have you been out of the workforce for a while, or do you feel that you haven’t been able to grow in your current job due to a lack of challenge? Then sign up for a course to brush up on your knowledge. With your newly acquired knowledge, your self-esteem will also get a boost.
Quitting your old job
When you change jobs, you also have to quit your old job. This is often a difficult and exciting time. For the woman who found a new job after 12 years, this ultimately proved more exciting than finding a new job.
If you find it difficult to address your employer about your decision to change jobs, it is wise to use self-hypnosis to boost your confidence for this conversation, because what are you really afraid of?
Of course, an employer may be disappointed that you are leaving, but that disappointment is also because he/she then has to look for new staff again and that is another hassle for him/her. He/she can then take this out on you a bit.
It is important then to remind yourself that your (soon-to-be ex-)employer's problem is not your problem. This is a business deal and it is not like breaking up a friendship.
Retraining for another job
Sometimes you don’t just want to change jobs, but even the type of work you do. Recently, I even saw a story about people who retrained for jobs in the healthcare sector. They accepted that this would cause their income to drop by 50% (!), meaning it would be cut in half.
That then often says something about how ready you are with the situation you are in. Some were on welfare and would be worse off relative to their previous job. Relative to welfare, of course, working should always pay off.
It was incredibly special to me to see people working so selflessly.
Hypnosis can also help with retraining. For example, there are techniques you can use to stay focused on your homework. It doesn’t matter how old you are—you can learn something new at any age.
If you are unsure about this, a hypnotherapist can help you through hypnotic suggestions.
Self-confidence to overcome fear of failure
All of the preceding problems, of course, have something to do with your self-confidence. Fear of failure is a phobia that can hold you back when you actually want to change jobs or learn something new.
You then think that you can't do all this and that it's very bad if you don't succeed. That would then feel like the end of your life.
To get change in your life, such as in your job, it is very important to overcome fear of failure. Several hypnosis techniques are available for this as well.
In addition, mindfulness can help to ensure that you stay focused on what you are doing rather than on what could go wrong in the future or on what may have gone wrong in the past that gave you fear of failure.
When it comes to a past event, regression can help you overcome the event that caused your fear of failure. During regression, you can view the event with greater emotional distance. This allows you to find other explanations for what happened without immediately concluding that you have failed. This alone can provide an incredibly relieving feeling.
So to change jobs, it's important to have guts. To be bold, it is important to overcome fear of failure and to have confidence in your own ability. This confidence will make you stronger during job applications and even during salary negotiations.
Mindfulness—and especially hypnosis—can help you gain the confidence you need to change jobs. Want to learn more about exactly how hypnosis can do that? Then come to a workshop or take a course at the Hypnosis Institute of the Netherlands.
