Jessie de Hoog is the type of person you can place immediately: warm, down-to-earth and with that typical "come on" energy. She lives alone with her rabbit, has a close circle of friends and family, and enjoys being creative.
Photography, making things (lamps, clocks, tables), designing logos. Jessie loves creating anything. And the great thing is: her work as a hypnotherapist feels the same way to her. Not as a "have to," but as a hobby that happens to be enormously meaningful.
Four years ago, she started her first training with the Hypnosis Institute Netherlands (HIN). Not because she wanted to start a practice right away, but because she got stuck herself.
And exactly that makes her story relatable to many people: sometimes you start with something to help yourself ... and discover along the way that it also becomes your new direction.
What her life was like before HIN
Jessie worked in childcare for more than 15 years. For a long time that was fine, but in recent years it no longer felt right. Looking for a new challenge, she ended up at a company that didn't suit her and left within a year.
She then joined another organization: the first year went well, until she was placed in another location and was bullied out of there .
"They didn't do anything about that either," she says. "I was number four or five who got bullied out of there."
It's one of those situations that not only exhausts you, but also leaves you doubting yourself: is it me, am I adjusting? Jessie eventually ended up on sick leave. And if that wasn't enough, it coincided with the first corona year: a period she describes as intense, full of stress and loss.
She even became seriously ill and short of breath at first, not daring to go to the hospital, and decided to avoid the news altogether for a while.
Things also piled up in her personal life: her father got cancer and she lost several people in a short period of time, including two friends through suicide.
At some point, the system is just done. And so it was with Jessie: burnout symptoms, emotionally spent, and especially looking for something that would provide relief.
Why Jessie started hypnosis
During that time, Jessie came across the HIN's self-hypnosis course. How exactly? She doesn't remember that herself.
She received an email from Edwin Selij because she had purchased something from HIN once before (something she didn't even remember at the time, either). But that mail came at just the right time.
She started with self-hypnosis and noticed a difference almost immediately.
"That gave me SO much relief," she says. "I was actually out of my burnout symptoms in no time."
And then came the thought that changed everything for Jessie: "if this is already doing so much for me ... what will happen when I start doing the training?"
Important detail: Jessie initially started the training purely for herself. She had no plan at all to become a hypnotherapist yet. She was just looking for something that worked, quickly, practically and with real impact.
The insight that flipped the switch
The tipping point was not only in the effect of hypnosis on her own symptoms, but also in the clarity that came afterward.
Jessie felt: I don't want to go back to childcare. Not because she didn't appreciate the profession, but because she found that she was "done with it." Done with the atmosphere, with the accumulation, with the idea that she had to go back to a place where her energy was slowly leaking away.
So she decided, in her own spontaneous way: then I'll start my own business.
And they did.
She started her practice and continued to build on her skills along the way. Jessie also has a creative background: before working in childcare, she took courses in advertising/drawing and marketing with design. She still uses pencil and paper, as she explains with a laugh. That creative side is now reflected in her entrepreneurship and in how she runs her practice.
Studying at HIN: what worked for her (and what was spicy)
Jessie took the courses at a time when much was still online.
1.0: online, large group, little feedback
The 1.0 she did online with a huge group (over a hundred people). She found that difficult at times, especially since there was little personal feedback. She also missed that bit of feedback in breakout rooms.
But: she made it. And she kept going.
2.0: online, smaller and more familiar
The 2.0 also followed them online, but with a smaller group. As a result, it already felt safer and more familiar. "You know better what you're doing, you dare more, and you're less concerned with 'am I doing it right?", Aldus Jessie.
3.0: live, in-depth and truly a journey
Jessie attended the 3.0 course in person, and that was one of the highlights for her. “Practicing together, seeing each other in person, and learning new tools that aren’t just ‘more tricks,’ but offer real depth.”
And the funny thing? Just when she had been practicing for a while, she noticed how educational it still was.
"You'd think that if you've had a practice for a while, it would come naturally. But I suddenly didn't know how to say anything. I was completely shut down."
It was about posture, alignment, moving with the client, feeling exactly what you are doing at what time. Jessie noticed: this is getting finer, sharper and more professional, not repeating what she was doing before.
She calls the 3.0 a real journey: "encountering a lot of yourself, having to step back for a while to let everything sink in, and coming out stronger in the end."
"I also noticed with clients that if there is something, I can respond to it much better. Much more confident."
What she likes most about hypnosis
Jessie likes things that work. Not doing complicated for the sake of doing complicated.
She says it delightfully directly:
"I like quick and easy. Being able to really get rid of your anxiety within three sessions is what I like."
What moves her most is what happens after a session —not only for the client, but also for herself:
"When I give someone a session, I have energy for a hundred afterward. So nice to have been able to help someone."
That's typical Jessie: practical, but with a big heart. To her, hypnosis is not a "floaty thing," but a method that allows someone to regain air, feel space and move forward.
The biggest lesson as an entrepreneur: stay true to yourself
Although hypnosis suited her well, entrepreneurship was another story. Jessie got into it without "having any knowledge" of entrepreneurship, as she calls it. And then what happens to many startup entrepreneurs happens: you start taking courses, finding coaches, trying systems ... and everyone has something you need to do.
For the first two years, this left her quite confused.
Her biggest lesson?
"Stick to yourself. Do what you love. Feel what suits you.
Not every sales system, not every tool, not every marketing method has to be your route." Jessie learned along the way: when it gets too much, you lose yourself and then you lose the very point you started with.
What Jessie is doing now with hypnosis
Jessie has now had her own practice for about three years. The name is significant:
The Magical Change(demagicalchange.co.uk)
She is focusing more and more clearly on entrepreneurs. Not because entrepreneurs have one kind of problem, but because they bring a mindset that makes Jessie happy: drive, perseverance and the will to really take steps, even when they get stuck.
"They want to grow their business and run it well. That mindset attracts me."
She often works with a course of three sessions to get started. After that, clients can do separate sessions as needed. Jessie is honest about this: sometimes you're done quickly, sometimes you're "quite a ways down the road," depending on the topic and the person.
She is also active as a family caregiver in addition to her practice. Work she finds valuable and which she now combines with her practice, as the practice is not yet full enough to live on.
Why she recommends training at HIN to others
Jessie is not the type to "talk" people into something; rather, she is someone who says, if you are stuck with yourself, do something with it and choose what suits you.
She recommends people to:
- The training to do because you learn a tremendous amount about yourself (but it also requires something of you);
- OR go to a hypnotherapist, if you want it fast and practical.
In her words, "with a psychologist, it can take a long time, whereas hypnosis can often bring a lot of change in relatively few sessions, especially if you are goal-oriented."
From surviving to building
What makes Jessie's story so powerful is that it doesn't begin with "I had a dream of becoming a hypnotherapist." It starts with, " I was through, I found something that worked, and then a door opened.
From bullying and burnout symptoms, through self-hypnosis and training, to her own practice helping others and energizing herself.
And perhaps that is the core of Jessie de Hoog:
She is not someone who stuck with what happened to her.
She is someone who made something new out of it.
