Family Coach: Hypnosis to reach all family members

Sometimes, due to circumstances, things don’t go well in families. Stress can cause emotional problems, which can make caring for and raising children more difficult . Your family may also simply have the misfortune of having a seriously ill child. In cases like these, a family coach can help you find solutions.

Knowledge of hypnosis can help family coaches help their clients more quickly, reducing their reliance on help.

Parenting help

A family coach is best known for parenting help. If this is necessary, you can request an indication from the municipality. Then you engage youth care, this can have far-reaching consequences.

A family coach will first observe to see what roles people take on within the family, what the family dynamics are, and how family members communicate with one another. This gives the coach insight into the tips and exercises that will be provided later.

At the Hypnosis Institute Netherlands, we sometimes say that parents should educate themselves first, before they educate their children. After all, children mirror behavior. So if your own behavior is good, everything quickly becomes a lot easier.

A family coach can also conduct individual sessions with family members to explore roles and help people define their own identity and be true to that identity within the family. This means, for example, learning to set boundaries, and sometimes it can mean breaking “family rules.” People are then helped to be completely themselves[1].

When parents dare to be themselves, it also helps children to be in their power.

Hypnosis[2] is one of the tools that can be used to help people with this. Hypnosis enables people to connect deeply with their subconscious, allowing them to identify potential causes of problems more quickly. Additionally, people under hypnosis are more open to suggestions. As a result, proposed solutions can be adopted more quickly. This can lead people to think differently and, consequently, adjust their behavior.

It is important when introducing hypnotherapy as a family coach to properly explain what hypnosis is and what people can expect from it. Because these types of expectations can affect outcomes[3].

One advantage of using hypnosis in family coaching is that it at least ensures the family has a fun experience together[4]. These kinds of experiences are important for strengthening trust within the family and for moving beyond defensive behavior or conflicts. By hypnotizing them, you’re actually pulling them out of the “hypnosis” of the conflict 😉. This can create an atmosphere that actually contributes to finding solutions.

They also learn that it is possible to achieve a shared good mood. In doing so, it can help them become more connected to themselves and more empathetic to other family members.

This can cause people to get a shift, change, in their outlook on certain problems[5].

Resolving Arguments

Resolving conflicts can often be achieved by looking at individuals within the family. A study of women experiencing marital conflict found that strengthening their sense of self, finding meaning in life, and having a clear sense of identity helped resolve marital problems. The women also experienced a better quality of life [6]. This was achieved through cognitive behavioral therapy combined with hypnosis.

In the process, you can also use hypnosis to suggest to people that they just take a moment to empathize with the other person. This can improve understanding about how the other person views the problem, making it easier for the warring parties to reach a solution that works for both of them.

A gratitude exercise can also go a long way toward changing your perspective on other family members. At the Hypnosis Institute of the Netherlands, we sometimes suggest that you can be grateful for the lessons your parents taught you. They may not even have taught these lessons consciously, such as:

  1. I'm grateful that I used to have to do a lot myself, because now I can work independently.
  2. I am grateful that I saw how not to do it, because now I know how to do it.

For parents, these types of exercises can also be helpful to refresh their child's outlook.

  1. I’m grateful that my child has ADHD, because at least now my days aren’t boring anymore 😉.
  2. I am grateful to discover life for the second time, through the eyes of my child.

These types of exercises can already provide a lot of emotional relief.

Improve communication

There’s a lot of communication within a family. At the very least, about what’s for dinner. Sometimes a family member may have difficulty communicating, for example, because they suffer greatly from anxiety. Family coaching with hypnosis can then help that person function better within the family and react and communicate with less anxiety[7].

What's also nice is that having knowledge of hypnosis can already help parents and children improve their communication as well. A little training in hypnosis can help people read body language better get to a certain point faster[8].

Connective communication can also be practiced. This is a form of communication that causes you to resolve conflicts, rather than making them worse. A study of training in this form of communication found that it helped greatly in reducing conflict in marriages[9].

In this communication, there is a type of formula that you then use, namely:

  1. You describe the situation, without attaching judgment to it.
  2. You express what feeling the situation gives you.
  3. You indicate what your need is regarding the problem.
  4. You make a specific request. The question must be able to be answered yes or no.

In a troubled family, a parent can use this form of communication if, for example, a child keeps coming home late.

  1. I see that in the last week you have come home more than three times later than we agreed.
  2. I feel concerned then.
  3. I need to know you are safe and respectful of the agreements we make.
  4. Can you send me a message, or call, if you find that you will be home later than we agreed?

This works much better to point out to your child that you actually have a positive intention, namely your child's safety, with those agreements rather than your need to control your child. This can also encourage a child to stick to agreements better, or at least communicate better.

Solving parents' problems

Sometimes parents may also find that they have issues with their child that they themselves had with their own parents.

At the Hypnosis Institute Netherlands, we call this a generational problem. The nice thing is that when someone is aware of this they can do something to stop the problem in their generation or at least their family line. Something a family coach can use as well.

With regression, for example, we often go back to the very first moment when you first became aware of this problem. Then, we can work with that moment to correct a belief that arose as a result[10].

In the case of family problems, it is possible to visualize a conversation between the client’s inner child and one of their parents. In this way, the client can engage in a conversation with parents who may no longer be alive, to gain insight into the issues and realize that they themselves can approach their child’s upbringing and care in a different way than their own parents did.

We often find that this acts as a great relief and allows for new suggestions on how they then want to deal with their children and any future problems in the future.

Counseling if you have a seriously ill child

Sometimes you can also have the misfortune of having a seriously ill child. This in turn can cause all kinds of stress and other problems than if you have "normal" problems. In situations like this, a family coach may be recommended by doctors to help parents deal with the stress and emotions of having a sick child.

A family coach can then provide input, for example, on how to organize parents' lives, and the agencies that can help care for a sick child.

In addition, knowledge of hypnosis and self-hypnosis can help parents relax. For example, through self-hypnosis and visualizing a safe place, parents can unwind after a stressful day. This also improves their self-control, reduces anxiety, and can change their perspective on the problem.

In the process, parents can use this knowledge to help their child, who after all is also under a lot of stress due to the disease, to cope with the disease. Which also makes parents feel that they can better help their child[11].

Hypnosis as a tool for the family coach

As a family coach, knowledge of hypnosis can be incredibly helpful in promoting communication within a family and returning the family to functioning as a beautiful whole. It is a way to get out of an unhealthy "vibe" and give people optimism about the future again.
