Generate confidence and respect at work

Making a career is something many people want, but something not everyone succeeds in. This is actually quite peculiar because why does one person succeed and another not. This has to do with many things, such as what you can do and, of course, human factors. Generating trust and respect for your work by the person who is about your promotion.

In this article, I discuss ways you can inspire confidence and respect at work.

Research shows that people are treated differently according to their skin color, clothing, height, neighborhood they live in, wealth they have, type of car they drive and how popular they are with other people. Even the type of job you have and the status associated with it can cause people to treat you differently. For example, someone who works at McDonalds is often treated differently than someone who works at a drugstore.

Included in this are some factors you have no control over, such as your skin color or height, but fortunately there is also much you can do that you do have control over. Like the ego you have. Negative thoughts are often attached to a person's ego. "What an ego-tripper" - "He has way too big an ego." And that's very unfortunate.

Ego is necessary for respect

Your inner view of yourself. The self-worth you give yourself and the ego you therefore have. A lack of a good ego, of self-worth, can also cause a lack of respect.

This is because people with low self-esteem are often defensive in their communication. When you then receive feedback, you may deny mistakes, try to compensate for mistakes, or you project your own insecurity onto others, such as your colleagues.

All in all, no recipe for getting respect from those same colleagues who deal with this insecure behavior.

This kind of uncertainty can have other implications as well:

  • Stress makes it difficult to learn new things.
  • You have concentration problems.
  • You can't see a solution to problems.
  • You get to fear other people.
  • The desire for respect and appreciation of what you can do is only growing (with narcissistic traits).
  • Feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness are amplified.
  • Some expectations are unrealistic.

Being defensive often causes other people to react defensively as well, which only further tramples the ego and thus further dents your self-esteem.

Increase self-esteem for greater respect and confidence

To gain respect and trust, it is first important that you also trust and respect yourself. Therefore, it is important to first take good care of yourself and not be too hard on yourself.

Self-compassion is important to independently regain your ego and self-esteem.

When your own self-esteem is restored to its optimal level you will find that your behavior changes as a result.

  1. You can handle criticism better.
  2. You don't take everything personally.
  3. You are more creative.
  4. You'll learn more.
  5. You can communicate better.
  6. You can defer immediate gratification for achieving the greater goal.
  7. You have more of a sense of autonomy.

These are important features to start building trust with your colleagues and supervisors.

Painful memories can also cause your self-esteem to not be what it should be. It is then important to process that memory properly. A hypnotherapist can help you with this through regression therapy.

This form of therapy allows you to look at that moment in a different way that also gives you different beliefs that are better for your self-confidence and self-esteem.

Build trust with colleagues

Trust between colleagues is very important for developing creativity with each other and exploring new ideas and opportunities for your business, or the company where you work. The first step to establishing trust with your colleagues is to trust them too.

Generally, colleagues want everything to flow nicely and not be too difficult. A lack of trust often causes struggles and irritations.

In doing so, it is important to also show reliability and responsibility . You then complete tasks on time, you communicate it in a timely manner if something does threaten to go wrong.

So do what you say you're going to do and report it in time if you still can't reach a certain goal without help.

Keeping confidential information private, too

Another way to build trust with colleagues is to also handle sensitive information properly. Does someone tell you something with the comment that it should be kept secret? Then keep it secret, too.

Colleagues also often tell each other more than what happens at work. Problems with children, relationships or even parents are sometimes discussed and, of course, that doesn't have to be hung out in the open.

Increase chances of promotion at work

Gaining trust and respect at work from colleagues will already take you a long way in terms of chances for promotion, but that's not the only thing that matters.

After all, you also have to build up the courage to actually ask for that promotion.

It is therefore important to prepare well for the conversation in which you ask for the promotion. Through proper preparation, you can already do a lot to improve your self-confidence.

Make a list of things you have accomplished

For example, make a list of things you have accomplished, such as increasing sales, completing projects on time, courses you have taken for proper knowledge.

By making this list, you will also immediately have arguments to convince your boss or manager that you are ready for more responsibility.

Determine what you need to be able to do for the promotion

Developing yourself is very important for achieving a promotion. Therefore, check what requirements will be placed on you in the new position and broaden your knowledge. Teaching yourself new things will also improve your self-confidence and self-assurance.

This also makes you more confident during the promotional interview.

View your work positively

You may currently feel that you are working below your skill level. This may cause you to radiate no positivity and be somewhat pessimistic. The right attitude often also increases the chances of success for getting a promotion.

To view your work positively, you can make a positivity list of sorts. In this you put at the end of each work day what you liked about the work day, challenge yourself to write down at least 3 or 5 things. For example:

I was in the flow.

Nice conversation with colleague X.

Satisfied customer on the phone.

Don't suck up to your manager

Sucking up to your manager is generally not appreciated. Especially if that's all you do. This is precisely why the respect and trust of your colleagues is also important. By showing that you can work well with people and participate in the company culture, you stand a better chance than if you bring your manager coffee every day.

If you even take over responsibilities from your manager in the expectation that he/she will like it, you often come out disappointed. In fact, this often comes across as threatening, reducing your chances.

Check your timing

The timing when you request a call is very important. If you know someone in the HR department who can talk more about where the company is headed and what the manager's plans are, that is helpful. This can ensure that you start the interview earlier if your manager is transferred, for example.

Also, keep an eye on whether or not your manager is busy on that day. It is also helpful if your manager has just eaten, i.e., in the morning or after lunch. At least not at the end of the day or right before lunch when the rumbling stomach is a distraction.

Check out why you want the promotion

Thinking that a promotion solves a problem is not true. Let me help you out of that dream in advance. A promotion will not make you happy in one go. The only thing it helps you with is having a little more money in your bank account.

If you want a promotion to become happy, there are other ways to get that happiness. In fact, the added stress of more responsibility can make you unhappy. On the other hand, if you find that happiness first, the chances of getting a promotion are again higher because you will also be a lot more relaxed.

Now that you're sure you want the promotion because of the challenge or next step in your life, you can use all these tips to pursue your business success.
