Why Not All Hypnotherapists Are the Same (and How to Recognize a HIN Therapist)
You know how it goes. You’re dealing with a problem you finally want to get rid of. You search the internet, read a few stories, and think, “You know what? I’m going to book a session with a hypnotherapist.” Full of hope, you step into the practice room. You’re invited to lie down in a comfortable chair. The therapist dims the lights, plays soft music with birds chirping, and begins to speak to you in a soothing voice.
“Your little toe is relaxed… and the toe next to it is relaxing… and your whole foot is getting heavy…”
Three-quarters of an hour later, you’re back outside. You’ve heard a nice little story about a walk in a mysterious forest; you’re feeling pretty relaxed, but deep down, something is gnawing at you. You think: “Yeah, right… Was that it? Was I actually under hypnosis? I think I just spent three-quarters of an hour with my eyes closed, listening to a fairy tale.”
If you’ve experienced this, you’re definitely not alone. In fact, it’s the reason why so many people say, “Hypnosis? Oh, that doesn’t work for me.”
But today I’m going to let you in on an important secret: not all hypnotherapists are created equal. And the difference between a traditional, classical hypnotherapist and a modern HIN hypnotherapist (trained according to the methods of the Hypnosis Institute of the Netherlands) is truly astronomical.
If you think you can’t be hypnotized because you once had one of those “woo-woo” guided meditations, please read on very carefully. I’m going to explain exactly what the big difference is and how real, life-changing hypnosis actually works.

Myth 1: You have to be completely exhausted or super relaxed for hypnosis
Let’s start right away with the biggest misconception in the entire world of therapy: the myth that hypnosis is synonymous with deep, languid relaxation. Many mainstream therapists use relaxation as the primary method (and often the only method) to induce hypnosis in a person.
Of course, relaxation can be a great way to enter a hypnotic state. But hypnosis is not relaxation.
Just think about it logically. Have you ever seen a hypnosis journey or a hypnosis show on TV? Do you see people there just lying there asleep? Not at all! Those people are on stage dancing, jumping, and having fun.
Or the hypnotist gives the suggestion: “You are now watching a terrifying horror movie,” and people go into a state of stress. Are they relaxed at that moment? Not at all! And yet they are in a very deep state of hypnosis.
So, at its core, hypnosis has absolutely nothing to do with physical or mental relaxation. Hypnosis is focused attention. It is an intense, inward-focused state in which the rest of the world temporarily fades away completely. And that focus does not necessarily involve a body lying half-asleep on a sofa. Sometimes, deep relaxation during a therapeutic session isn’t even helpful, because you actually need the active cooperation of the subconscious mind.
Hypnosis alters brain activity[1].
So say goodbye to those endless, sleep-inducing talk sessions about your weak left knee and your relaxed right ear. It can actually be done much faster, more spectacularly, and more effectively.
The Power of Rapid Induction: Entering Hypnosis in Under a Minute
What sets a real HIN hypnotherapist apart? They cut through the fluff and opt for rapid induction.
When you go to a therapist’s office, you’re probably a little nervous. You wonder: “Ugh, what’s going to happen? Will this even work for me?” There’s a healthy amount of tension. A traditional therapist first tries to “massage” that tension away with words for 45 minutes. What a waste of time! A good HIN hypnotherapist, on the other hand, makes use of that very tension.
By using a rapid induction, you’ll be put into hypnosis within one minute— boom! For a split second, your brain enters a state of mild shock or total confusion. And that confusion is magical.
Why? Because it immediately bypasses your mind’s critical function. The back door to your critical mind swings wide open in an instant, clearing the path to the subconscious mind for powerful, transformative suggestions[2].
Within a minute, you’ll experience a hypnotic phenomenon. Your arm will involuntarily rise, your eyes will suddenly be firmly shut, or your hand will be stuck to the armrest of the chair. You’ll want to experience that! It’s sure to amaze you.
You don’t have to wonder if something happened, because you experienced it firsthand in your own body. You think, “Wow, what on earth is going on here?!”
It is only from that deep sense of wonder and conviction that you can truly begin to do deep therapeutic work, whether it involves regression, inner child work, or transforming old blockages.
Why We’re Breaking the Mold (and Why Conventional Therapists Don’t Dare to)
There is still a huge difference between the average therapist and the therapists we train. And that difference lies in the testing protocol.
At the Hypnosis Institute of the Netherlands, we follow a rock-solid protocol in which we test—as many as 15, 20, or sometimes even more frequently during a session—whether the problem, fear, or blockage has truly disappeared completely.
We challenge the problem, so to speak: “Try to bring that old fear back up again. Go back to that situation. Can you still do it? No? Try even harder.”
Why do we do that so often?
- To form new neural connections in the brain: By repeatedly trying to bring up old pain or fear during the session and noticing that the emotional charge is simply no longer there, new pathways are rapidly formed in your brain[3]. This maximizes the likelihood that the problem will remain at bay in the “real world.”
- To convince the client: If you’ve tried 20 times in the treatment room to feel as bad as you did before, and you just couldn’t do it at all, then you’ll walk out the door with an unshakable conviction. You’ve experienced with your own eyes and feelings that it’s gone.
Many conventional hypnotherapists, on the other hand, almost never conduct such tests. Why not? Because they’re secretly terrified that the problem will resurface during the session. Then they’ll think their therapy has failed.
But we say: Be thrilled if the problem resurfaces right now in the therapy room! Because if it comes up now, you, as a therapist, are on top of it and can address it immediately. If you send your client home without testing them and the issue resurfaces two days later, then it’s too late.
If, after that intensive testing at home, a small remnant were to unexpectedly resurface, it’s still no cause for alarm. Because the client has already become so convinced during the session that it can be eliminated, the brain often activates a self-healing capacity. People then, as it were, successfully complete their own therapy.
No pre-recorded fairy tales or scripts
Let’s be honest: a lot of traditional hypnotherapy bears a striking resemblance to a script being read aloud. The therapist pulls out a folder, finds the tab labeled “quitting smoking” or “fear of flying,” and begins reading a pre-written script.
It’s a miracle that this still works at all for some people. Those people just happen to be extremely suggestible and pick up on everything. But for the vast majority of people, this kind of run-of-the-mill sales pitch simply doesn’t work. You don’t see any images, you don’t feel anything, and you spend the whole time wondering what you’re going to have for dinner tonight.
A HIN hypnotherapist never works with pre-written scripts. Every person is unique, so every session is cutting-edge, tailor-made. No fairy tales read aloud, but dynamic interaction, rapid inductions, deep interventions, and rigorous testing.
That’s the formula that ensures people walk out the door with a deep sense of wonder. They’ve experienced a life-changing session and see tremendous results right away, all in just one session.
How do you find a real hypnotherapist?
So, have you ever had a session in the past where you thought, “Meh, it was a nice guided meditation, but it didn’t do much”? Please don’t jump to the conclusion that hypnosis doesn’t work for you. You most likely just didn’t see the right therapist. If you experience a real, dynamic hypnosis session, you’re guaranteed to change your tune.
To separate the wheat from the chaff and ensure you end up with the absolute best, we’re hard at work behind the scenes on the platform bestetherapeut.nl. This platform is the go-to place to find certified HIN hypnotherapists who work strictly according to these powerful, modern methods.
