I have a book called "You Don't Have It, You Do It." This is actually about your self-healing ability and how you can do something, to suffer less from your problems whether it's your physical health or psychological symptoms. Maybe you can even resolve them completely.
Of course hypnosis plays a big role in this for me, but really hypnosis is a means of getting to your internal resources to solve problems yourself. It is a way to help yourself more easily by finding and removing unconscious blockages.
So this blog goes a little deeper into your self-healing ability and how to reach this ability within yourself and use it for your body and mind.
Your personality and your healthy life
Not everyone is equally healthy, but everyone has self-healing abilities. The differences in that health often lie in your personality. For example, someone who has a personality where responsibility and keeping appointments is important often lives longer and healthier than someone who does not have these traits as much. This is because, for example, they exercise 3 times every week.
The interesting thing is that positive thinking is not always great for your health, but it often is[1]. Some degree of pessimism and worry can also protect your health, because it does cause you to consciously live healthier lives[2].
So your thoughts and lifestyle already have a lot of influence on your health and how long you live. This already hints at what is important for improving your self-healing ability.
Self-healing body
The self-healing ability of the body has a great connection to your psychology. For example, the placebo effect shows that your thoughts have a great deal of influence on healing your body and mind (source 1).
Even without doing anything consciously, the body has many ways to heal itself. For example, pain is important not to move when a wound needs to close. You get a fever to kill bacteria and fungi so you don't die from that bacteria.
All that "being sick" does to you is actually the body healing itself.
The placebo effect also reveals something strange. Because apparently we can just get better, but our subconscious or that which causes the healing response in the body needs a certain permission. The permission of the pill (placebo pill) that it is now really allowed to heal the body. The permission of the shaman that it is time to move on.
This also shows that your body, or your subconscious mind, can get stuck in your past , so to speak, and not move on with healthy living until something happens that brings closure to the past (source 1). This could be a placebo pill, or it could be a certain revelation you get through a conversation with a psychologist or hypnotherapist, for example, in the case of a psychological problem.
Or because you've read that book and done assignments so you can have that epiphany 😉.
Other research also shows that in wound healing, for example, psychological interventions can be helpful in promoting that healing. Social support , for example, can neutralize the influence of stress because of the wound, which will improve wound healing[3] and that, of course, is also part of your self-healing ability.
Self-healing for mental health issues
You also have self-healing abilities with psychological symptoms. You probably also feel better in your body when you have resolved your psychological complaints. Usually you then literally feel lighter, even though you are not literally lighter.
You can also work with your body to resolve mental health issues. For example, Tai Chi and Qi Gong are also used in psychotherapy to heal your mind by actually making your body healthier[4].
But even with psychological symptoms, you may be "stuck" in your past, so to speak. One way to treat this yourself is with Naikan therapy. This therapy promotes your mental health by making you reflect on your past experiences through your personal relationships[5]. By asking yourself what you have been given, given and what difficulties you have caused, for example, you can do a lot to gain insight into yourself and with this become motivated to change[6].
With hypnotherapy, you can also look at your past and see how something at this point in your life is still causing unpleasant situations. For example, if you suffer from depression, hypnotherapy can help eliminate it by looking at certain facets of yourself[7].
With hypnosis you reach your subconscious and can change emotions, thoughts and your way of thinking, psychology, in order to resolve (unconscious) conflicts. The idea is to be able to get to the cause of a certain disease with hypnosis[8].
At HIN, we always say that hypnotherapy helps you heal yourself because you have everything you need within you. Hypnosis and therapy is only the tool, but ultimately you do it.
Self-hypnosis can do the same for you if you know how it works.
At the HIN, you will learn all kinds of things, but we think Ericksonsian hypnotherapy is very important and this is also important for promoting your self-healing ability, whether it is physical or mental problems.
Suggestions and the use of metaphors then help you suffer less from mental health problems, or even eliminate them altogether[9].
Another important technique is regression. With regression , you go back in your past to the moment when a belief arose that is causing you psychological distress now. It is somewhat similar to the Naikan technique in the sense that you take a look at your past, but at the same time it is completely different.
Indeed, instead of reflecting, you start doing something with that moment in your mind to change its interpretation. For example, you can empathize with people who were there at that moment to see if you think about it differently now than you did then. Or you can start the conversation with your inner child that the situation is over and that everything is okay now. That a certain protective mechanism is no longer helping you, but rather blocking you.
With regression, you can also imagine going to past lives if you cannot find the cause of your problem in your current life, especially women benefit from treatment that also addresses past lives and the period between lives compared to men (source 8).
This can be used, for example, for anxiety disorders. Each individual's treatment may vary, but a hypnotherapist has many techniques that can be used in addition to regression to trigger self-healing and overcome anxiety[10].
In addition, you can also use hypnosis to apply other therapeutic treatments. Such as Jung's analytical psychology[11] or Cognitive behavioral therapy.
Self-hypnosis and self-healing capacity
As mentioned, hypnotherapy can help you with your self-healing abilities, but of course it's even more fun if you can apply self-hypnosis.
With self-hypnosis, for example, you can reduce work stress by repeating suggestions that make you feel better[12], such as:
"I'm good enough."
"I get to take my rest."
These are just examples. Depending on your health problem, you can use other suggestions to trigger your self-healing ability.
Affirmations can be used for all kinds of problems to promote self-healing. You can speak affirmations, write them down or listen to them[13], as during self-hypnosis.
In addition, self-hypnosis also helps burns heal faster[14].
So self-hypnosis can be used for self-healing for psychological and more physical complaints.
Boosting your self-healing abilities can be done in many ways, and hypnosis is one of them. You can get help from a hypnotherapist to break free from the past that keeps you sick or do a lot with self-hypnosis to support your body and mind to get better.
