Having to cry about everything: Tips on how to stop

That emotional commercial on television, the Titanic, the news, a friend telling you nice news, the moment when you realize once again that you love your partner for everything, really everything you shed at least a tear. You may find this very annoying, because especially at work you may be afraid that you will not come across as professional

Having to cry over everything can be a symptom of the following problems (or nice things)

  • Pregnancy
  • Depression
  • Burnout

Having to cry about everything because of pregnancy

Crying over everything can be a symptom of pregnancy. Your hormones change drastically, which can make you more emotional than usual. During pregnancy, for example, it’s very common to cry because of cute commercials on TV, the news, seeing a good friend again, or other babies.

It is very difficult to stop crying during pregnancy. If you still like to do this, it is helpful to realize that when something is fun just smiling broadly is also a good thing to do.

By changing your body posture, standing up straighter and by putting that big smile on your face and just relaxing and enjoying yourself, you can prevent yourself from bursting into tears after all.

Does this trick not work? Then a hypnosis expert can help you figure out which belief is causing you to cry and why this bothers you. By letting go of this, the crying may already decrease, or at least it will bother you less.

Having to cry about everything because of depression

Research into how people experience depression on Twitter shows that many people, when depressed, find themselves crying over everything—and I mean everything[1].

This is of course incredibly annoying, as crying can make you feel the sadness you have even worse which makes not acting depressed even more difficult.

Crying during depression can be a sign of your feelings of helplessness. To stop crying, a hypnosis expert can help you by reducing beliefs that create those powerless feelings. Initially, those beliefs are then identified. This can be done, for example, with a Socratic conversation in which the why question is repeated several times. In this way you get to the core of your beliefs.

The hypnosis expert then identifies which belief needs to be addressed and can choose from several techniques to weaken those beliefs, making you feel less powerless and reducing your need to cry. Who knows—you might even start thinking more positively and feel happier overall.

Having to cry about everything because of burnout

Burnout and depression are closely related, but the difference is that in burnout, work has drained the life out of you, rather than other factors or an imbalance in your brain’s chemical reactions.

During burnout, you've asked too much of yourself for too long, and every extra step you have to take is a giant step, even if it's just pouring a glass of water for yourself.

For example, you may cry in the car on the way to work and again on the way home. You may need to cry about overtime, you may need to cry when something good or bad happens to your co-worker.

If you find yourself crying a lot but haven’t yet realized you’re experiencing burnout, a hypnosis expert can help you identify the beliefs and emotions that are causing you to keep working even though you’re a crybaby every day and take crying breaks in the restroom during work.

For example, it may be a mismatch between your motivation for work and what you find yourself actually working for. The culture at your work can also cause burnout, and arguments at work and whether there is some kind of fighting culture contribute to the development of burnout[2].

Having to cry about everything without knowing why

Sometimes you can also just be a very emotional person and not know why you are crying. Whatever emotion you have, you cry. A negative emotion is crying and being happy is also crying.

Where this came from may be a mystery.

Perhaps you subconsciously believe you ’re not worthy of true happiness, and it always feels a bit awkward to laugh because of that underlying issue that makes you cry.

Finding the cause of crying

If you don’t know why you always feel the need to cry, a hypnosis expert can help you with regression. Through regression, you go back to the moment when your subconscious decided that crying is the best solution in many situations or when dealing with many emotions. By looking back at that moment with your adult perspective, you can see much more quickly whether that belief makes sense or not. Then, if the belief is illogical, you can quickly let it go and make room for a new one.

Become less prone to crying

Hypnosis is also used to reduce the tendency to cry. For example, many people cry at weddings. Hypnosis has been used since the 1970s to make people less prone to crying during such celebrations[3]. This is because stress can be a cause of excessive crying.

Hypnosis can also be used to become less prone to crying. Through the induction of hypnosis and by, for example, correctly linking a body part[4], such as your hand, to crying and separating this from your facial expression, crying due to positive experiences or startle can also become less.

For example, you will learn to laugh correctly when something is fun.

Visualizations to stop crying

In addition to this technique, you can also use other tricks to stop crying, such as:

  • Deep breathing through the belly
  • Press your tongue against your palate
  • Relax your facial muscles
  • Walk away from the situation
  • Break through your thoughts that cause crying

To successfully apply these techniques, practice is key. Even though you may be crying over everything right now, it's still nice if you can practice in a safe environment and not immediately get super-bad if you don't manage to stop crying.

A hypnosis expert can then help you with a guided visualization. When you know what situations or images cause you to cry, you can visualize them. A hypnosis expert will help you to completely immerse yourself in the visualization so you may already feel the tears prickling in your eyes. For example, your love for your family may be stimulated if having breakfast with your family, and the gratitude that you can do that, every day causes you to burst into tears.

When you get this feeling through visualization, the hypnosis expert practices techniques with you to stop crying. You visualize breathing through the belly, you do breathing through the belly. You visualize pressing your tongue against your palate, you do pressing your tongue against the palate. You visualize relaxing your facial muscles and you do relaxing your facial muscles and even walking away is something you can visualize during such a session and actually do.

Such visualization is, of course, also possible at times that cause negative emotions, such as frustration or anger, and how to deal with them and how to perhaps express the frustration and anger precisely in a way that helps you so that people around you can take notice.

Reduce stress to stop crying

Stress is often a major factor for people who cry constantly. Burnout is often a result of too much work-related stress. Depression is a result of too much stress in virtually every aspect of your life, and pregnancy is, of course, also incredibly stressful, because you want to provide your child with a safe environment in which to grow up. News stories or family arguments can then lead to feelings that the world is a terrible place and that you might not have a safe environment for your child at all—except, perhaps, in your own home.

Therefore, reducing stress can also be incredibly beneficial in reducing crying. If working less is necessary, do so. If you need help, ask for help. Search the Internet for organizations that can help you with your problem.

If there are certain people you really can’t stand, try to see them less often (if possible).

Having to cry about everything can be incredibly disturbing, and at times you will have little understanding of your (overpowered) emotions. Therefore, it is helpful to figure out why you cry a lot. There are some well-known reasons, but there are also many unknown reasons.

A hypnosis expert can help you figure out those causes and practice techniques to stop crying.
