Do you have trouble remembering words or phrases? Do you find it hard to do anything with numbers and feel like "I can't learn for my exams" or even just feel like you can't learn at all? This is very annoying, because feeling like you can't learn can hinder you tremendously in your life.
In the end, it is often necessary to learn something, such as riding a bike, driving a car, cleaning and certain skills for your job. So in this blog, we'll take a closer look at the belief that you can't learn. After all, where does that come from?
Why can't I learn well
Beliefs are often formed in your childhood. That's also the time you go to school to learn something. An unfortunate comment from a teacher or one of your parents can then be enough to give you a belief that you cannot learn well.
Or maybe you had a moment when you had to present something and then you forgot what to say and this problem has persisted ever since. Then the belief that you can't learn can intensify and before you know it, you think you can't learn for your exams.
With hypnotherapy, you can use regression to find out if a similar event or an unfortunate comment in your childhood has caused you to think you have a hard time learning.
Then the therapist can help you revisit this moment with your mature knowledge. That alone can give you new insights that make the belief that you can't learn weaker, or even go away altogether, allowing you to become an awesome learning bear.
You can use this technique (and other hypnosis techniques) whether you are a scholar, student or already an adult.
Student research shows that just four hypnotherapy sessions are enough to increase motivation to learn. This is partly because limiting beliefs are removed[1].
I can't learn at home
One less psychological barrier to learning is that you cannot learn at home. In that case, see if you can stay longer at school to learn there or go to a (public) library where it is often quiet.
Since you are then also surrounded by books and knowledge, this can be a fine setting to focus on learning properly.
In addition, you may feel that you are a completely different person at home than at school and therefore find it difficult to learn at home. Indeed, many people see home and school as two completely different places and therefore find it difficult to combine their home and school roles[2].
One way to still get this done is to make a place at home, for example, that you have exclusively for learning. So you're not going to learn at the kitchen table, but you put a desk somewhere quiet, for example, and that becomes your home-school place for learning.
With hypnosis, you can also examine your roles that you take on, such as who you are at home, who you are with friends and who you are at school or at work and then you can look at how those roles have similarities anyway, so that you find it easier to learn in other places as well or to have fun at school as well 😉.
I can't bring myself to learn
Procrastination is a big problem for learning something new, but it's certainly not something that few people suffer from. If you have bad habits that prevent you from learning, hypnosis can transform those bad habits into good habits that help you get motivated for learning. Hypnosis also helps to improve other problems that affect your learning, such as gaming, getting to school on time and even your relationship with your parents, eliminating barriers to mastering knowledge[3].
For example, one technique that can transform bad behavior, such as procrastination, into good behavior is the SWISH technique.
With the SWISH technique, you visualize your bad behavior and your desired good behavior, linking a negative emotion and a good emotion. Then you start alternating those visualizations faster and faster, until you choose the good emotion, so to speak, and thus the desired behavior.
You will find that you then automatically reach for your textbook rather than something that allows you to delay learning.
I can't concentrate while learning
If you're enjoying learning then, it's nice that you can focus. That requires some ability to concentrate . Initially, you can take a few practical steps such as hiding or silencing your smartphone so it doesn't distract you.
If you must necessarily sit at your computer, YouTube can even help you. In fact, many Korean YouTubers have videos to help you with your concentration.
These videos have relaxing background sounds to help with your concentration.
Some also have a timer to help you relax regularly so you can then refocus on what you need to learn.
Another way to improve your ability to concentrate is to practice mindfulness meditation. This helps you focus on the here and now and let go of thoughts about the future or the past. It also allows you to let go of thoughts about what else you could be doing besides learning, which helps keep you on track.
Still feel like you can't concentrate while learning? Then hypnosis can also help. For example, self-hypnosis can help you get into a kind of "learning vibe."
For example, you can then repeat suggestions that help you believe in your ability to concentrate and that you can learn well. These may include suggestions such as:
"I am a learning bear."
"I am focused on my learning goal."
"I take everything in well and can bring it back up later."
These are just examples. Depending on your concentration problems with learning, a hypnotherapist may give you other suggestions or perform techniques to remove beliefs that cause lack of concentration.
I can't learn while I'm an adult
Maybe you are well past the age when you are still expected to go to school, but still want to learn something new. If you feel as an adult that you cannot learn, this can be very frustrating, as you may feel trapped in the knowledge you have now and the lack of knowledge to enrich and change your life.
The good news is, you searched on can't learn. That means you at least want to be able to do this, and that's the first step to a growth mindset. That mindset will help you still be able to learn, even when you are an adult.
After all, everything is inventible.
You may have already noticed that learning doesn't work for you like it did when you were a child.
Research shows that there are differences in how adults learn and how children learn.
A few things are useful to keep an eye on then, namely:
What you will learn should align with your interests or you should be able to make a connection to what you like about what you are learning.
It is helpful if you can make a connection to what you will learn and how it connects to knowledge you have gained throughout your life. Whether this is personal knowledge or business knowledge, it doesn't matter.
If you want to learn something new, it's helpful if you have a specific goal in mind with that knowledge, and if the course or training supports that goal, it's incredibly helpful to be able to learn as an adult.
Consider how you can use what you learn in your life. It doesn't matter if this is about your personal life or your business life.
To improve your motivation to learn as an adult, it is helpful to consider why you find it important to learn something. In addition, consider how you can bypass certain obstacles, such as time and money, to still work on your adult learning journey[4].
A hypnotherapist can help you figure out how to remove obstacles. It doesn't matter whether these are practical obstacles or mental obstacles. In fact, often there is a mental obstacle at the source of a practical obstacle, such as how you then explain to your family that you like to invest time in your own development or how you indicate at work that you want to spend more time developing your skills.
In addition, all the tips described earlier are also applicable to you if you want to learn better.
