Communication and hypnosis

People often ask me, "What exactly is hypnosis? To me, all forms of communication are hypnosis so if you think like that then you probably get a whole different perspective on the phenomenon and better get good at it right?

Communication and Hypnosis

When you are 2 to 5 years old, your brain is not yet highly developed. For example, you do not yet have critical thinking skills and you do not yet know exactly what is right or wrong. You take almost everything for granted. So you are very susceptible to suggestions.

That's also true when you look at the brain. You are in a very low brain activity at that age , the Theta state, also called the dream state. It is also the state of creativity and flow and that is also one of the reasons you learn so easily at that age.

However, it is also the reason you take on everything. When you go into hypnosis, you also enter that state of creativity, focus and flow. You can then more easily take suggestions and follow instructions.

At that young age, your parents are the hypnotist and their communication determines how you become (to a large extent). Most parents are not aware of this and do not use communication as a form of hypnosis but purely random with all the consequences. Sometimes good, often not unfortunately.

Hypnotic Communication

When you start learning to communicate hypnotically, there are two things important to know about how our brain works. There are 2 things important in this.

A=B and A>B

The first A=B means that one is also the other, for example, he is nice or the sun is warm. Our brain likes that kind of generalization and almost immediately assumes it to be true.

The second A>B here means cause-and-effect reasoning, such as, for example, the road is wet because it is raining or I am happy because I am free.

You can use those 2 things very well in your communication to positivelyinfluence because the brain finds it easy to digest.

There was a fun study in the 1970s in which people were waiting in front of a copier. In that study, a woman arrived and asked if she could get ahead of the line. Some 60% then said "fine.

When the woman said, "Can I get ahead because I'm in a hurry," some 94% let her get ahead. That's not even all that strange because it's a good reason anyway, but even when she said, "May I get ahead because I need to do some copying?" still 93%! let her get ahead.

Incredible right?

Simply the word because made the result work, not the reason per se. This word alone is super powerful in your communication. Start using it more often in your communication and pair it with positive suggestions.

For example:

  • Sit down for a moment because it will calm you down
  • Take a listen because you'll understand what I'm saying
  • Hypnosis is easy because you've been doing it all your life
  • Etc.

When you read the above it all sounds logical but that's because of the word "because. Start using it more and be aware of the amazing results it will bring you.

The 3 Questions Protocol

Just another tip that teachers also use. Ask three questions in 1 sentence and you are more likely to have your instructions followed. For example:

'When you go to make tea will you take the cookies and close the cupboard right away?'

A no is then almost impossible because what do you say no to.... To making the tea, the cookies or closing the cupboard. It's almost impossible to do so you say yes....

Use it to your advantage 😉
