Ambition: the importance of ambition and the rest of your life
Ambition is the feeling or motivation that drives you to improve your life—for example, by earning more money, gaining power, or achieving certain successes in other ways.
Ambition involves a motivational process that helps you achieve certain goals.
People lead different lives because people have different goals in their lives, and those goals are determined in part by the ambition people have.
Ambition means constantly striving for success, achieving things and performing.
Once you've achieved your goal, ambition often doesn't end overnight. If you are an ambitious person you often just set new goals again. Also, you don't have to be ambitious only in a certain area of your life. You can be ambitious both with your work and/or with your relationships or with your own health. In general, though, ambition is about achieving worldly things.
The ambition you have is also often the result of your own ideas about how the world works and how you should function in it. It is usually about what you want to learn, the level of work you have (which says something about your status) or your income.
Ambition is also not always about the knowledge a person wants to gain for themselves, but also about the rewards you can get. Learning then, for example, is only interesting if it allows you to become a professor and not just someone who happens to know a lot about a particular subject.
In addition, it does not compare to the need for power. If you want power, you want to achieve a certain position because it gives you control over people. Someone with ambition may want to achieve the same position, but only because it gives them a certain status[1].
So with ambition, you also want to receive recognition for what you have achieved[2].
Have Ambition
People who have ambition often have one or more of the following characteristics:
- Care
- Extravert
- Neurotic
- Mentally strong
- Parents with jobs of prestige
Are you a student with parents who are well educated? If so, they often support your college ambitions more than less-educated parents. That support can in turn strengthen further ambition in your life[3].
If you have ambition, this often also ensures that you learn more, have a job with prestige and a higher income.
Describe Ambition
Companies often describe in their mission statement what they want to achieve[4]. You can also think of this as an ambition. Describing your ambition helps you determine what steps you can take in your life. This includes both practical steps and things you want to focus on mentally.
This can help you become more aware of opportunities, for example.
Ambition conversation
At work, you can also have an ambition conversation in which you use, for example, the description of your ambition to see if there are opportunities within the company to work on this.
Indeed, the reason most people quit their jobs is because they don't think they can grow within the company[5]. In an ambition interview you can make clear what you want to achieve and the company can indicate whether this is possible or not. In addition, a company can also share its own ambitions with you, which in turn can motivate you to achieve certain goals.
Research also indicates that ambition in the workplace is good for a company's performance (source 5). So it's definitely okay to have ambition.
If your company is very well suited to fulfilling your ambition, you are also more likely to commit to it and go that extra mile. Paradoxically, it is also true that the more ambition you have, the more often you change jobs. The latter is mainly something that depends on what your workplace has to offer you[6].
Ambition and the rest of your life
Depending on how ambitious you are, you can sometimes get a little tangled up with the rest of your life.
For example, you see a certain battle of ideas among women with ambition who work and are mothers at the same time. Chances are you then want to be the perfect mother, this is often also encouraged by the environment. A nice effect is that this can also make you more ambitious for your career, but at the same time the pressure to be the perfect mother can also lower your ambitions for your career again[7].
There is then an internal battle, which you can fight consciously and unconsciously.
Similarly, you can have an unconscious struggle between your ambition and what you want to do for it and what you think you may do for it. This depends on your beliefs about how the world works and how you function best in it.
For example, ambition is not always encouraged or you may be afraid of success because you are afraid that other people will then "think something" of you.
For example, do you have certain ambitions, but is something blocking you from really going after them? If so, it may be helpful to double-check your beliefs about, say, your work or family to see if they make sense and if it's really something you may be blocking.
Hypnosis for Ambition
With regression , for example, you can mentally go back to the first moment in your life when you realized you were holding yourself back, even though you could have taken a step toward fulfilling your ambition.
Often it's moments in your childhood that cause you to have a block somewhere. For example, do you have lower-educated parents? If so, they are slightly more likely to not fully understand your ambitions and thus not encourage them. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that they don't support you, but maybe they have a hard time getting along with you because you have already far surpassed their ambition.
With regression, you can go back to the first moment when you noticed, for example, that you still didn't do something you really wanted to. Then you can revisit this moment in your mind. After all, with your current knowledge, you know more than you did when the belief arose.
Just revisiting this and possibly empathizing with other people can free you from a limiting belief.
Sometimes a little more is needed and you can, for example, have your adult self talk to your younger self . For example, you can say something about how the situation is different now and how you now get to decide entirely for yourself what to do.
This is something a hypnotherapist can help you with, so that you are no longer hindered by unconscious beliefs created by past events.
Once such a limiting belief has been removed, it is often nice when something new takes its place. That's why you can start doing a progression. Instead of looking at your past, you then look at your future; at what your life will be like when you have fulfilled your ambition.
Then you'll take steps back in your mind until you're in the hypnotherapist's therapy chair. Those steps give you clear guidance on steps to take now that nothing is blocking you anymore.
In addition, you can also use some help to boost your confidence and ego so that you can fulfill your ambition. This can be done, for example, by providing some suggestions that you can repeat yourself, such as:
"I can do anything."
"I give myself permission."
"I'm good enough to take the plunge."
These are just examples. Depending on your beliefs, you can get other suggestions that will help you with your ambitions.
Finally, you can also receive a posthypnotic suggestion . This suggestion addresses your life after the hypnosis session and is designed to help you unconsciously start working on your ambition so that, at some point, you’ll notice that everything is falling into place naturally.
So hypnosis can very well help you with your ambition, even if you just want to get a good work-life balance.
