Working after high school: How do you do it?

Are you in high school right now? Then you often already know what talent you have to work with later. Which you can either use as a job or create a job with. Many people choose what to do based on what subjects they are good at in school and what pays well. This just doesn't mean you have to do this for the rest of your life.

So what will you choose to study? And is studying at all a good idea for you?

What you need to ask yourself if you want to work after high school or choose a particular study is: Can I be in that environment for 24 hours?

Can I sit in an office for 24 hours in a suit and deal with numbers? Can you be in a hospital for 24 hours?

It's often that simple.

The talent you have within you, that you were born with, is often something you can and want to spend 24 hours working on.

I had this too; I was a people person and enjoyed helping people. Only I couldn't think of a job with how I enjoyed doing that.

So I went to work in construction right out of high school, and 10 years later I knew how to turn my helping people talent into a job.

To avoid those 10 years, you can start working on your talent in high school, on what you enjoy doing. Even if you don't have a degree. That's not something that has to stop you from working.

Get to work!

Start your own business if you don't think you can get a job anywhere.

That you should get money for your work is actually quite extraordinary. Many people only want to show what they can do when there is a big bag of money in return. But what can happen if you show what you can do first?

"Go show what you can do first, then I'll pay you."

This is how entrepreneurs think.

So undertake when you're in high school. Go to a company and say you want to work for them for free. Then really get a "yes" after three months if you show what you can do, then having a degree doesn't matter. Your talent is then what matters whether you get a job after 3 months or not.

So it does matter that you know what you want, if not just go ahead and try things until you know what you want.

Give first, expect nothing in return. Give a lot and at some point you will get something back.

Is work good for you during high school?

So, in my opinion, working is good for you during high school, and scientists have also looked at the effect of working during high school. In this study, 2 things come out clearly. Working during high school can cause you to not finish high school (in the U.S.) and working during high school can actually cause you to get incredibly high grades[1].

For example, if you know your talent is to work with animals and you want to become a veterinarian, that's not something you can do for free for 3 months and you suddenly know how to operate on a cat that's suffering from something. You have to study for that.

Students working during high school to save up for college so you could pay for tuition. Those were the students who started getting higher grades by working alongside school.

Then there were students who dropped out of "high school" in their senior year; these are often the students who have found their talent. The talent they want to do something with.

As mentioned in the podcast, many very rich people did not finish their education. Bill Gates, for example, quit his education after the2nd year of Harvard[2]. Yes this is a little later than high school, but so then he knew what he had to do and that this would be fine.

So for the students who did worse, it could be that they found out that many subjects in working life don't really matter.

Swedish research also shows that having a job while in school can make you more likely to find a job after school because you have made more social connections[3].

Entrepreneurship during high school

What makes someone a good entrepreneur? Research shows that companies that have been around for more than 3 years are often founded by someone who is younger on average than companies that don't reach 3 years. In doing so, you are more internally motivated to have control and they are often not satisfied with the job they had before[4].

So starting young with entrepreneurship can help you make your business a greater success. And entrepreneurs thus have this mindset of first showing what they can do and then expecting money, in the beginning they don't even expect anything.

To go into business you need 3 traits, namely[5]:

  • Believe in your own abilities
  • A positive view of entrepreneurship.
  • Intent to Business.

So it is very important that you have the confidence that you can do business or at least figure out how to do it.

In addition, it is helpful if you think positively about entrepreneurship. You find entrepreneurship fun to do and you like to be in control of how you handle business, for example, with or without advice.

Then you need the intention to be entrepreneurial. After all, it's very difficult to be entrepreneurial if you really just want a salaried job.

You can think of entrepreneurial intention as the intention to be able to make your own decisions about what actions you want to take to make money. The opposite of wanting someone else to tell you what to do to make money, like being employed.

So for someone in high school who wants to create their own work, it is important to build on the belief in your own ability. To the belief that you can figure out how things work and how to manage to create a job with your talent.

If you have the intention to be entrepreneurial, but are not really succeeding yet with that belief in your own ability, hypnosis can help you strengthen this belief. Several hypnosis techniques can be used for this, such as:

  • Regression
  • Working from a successful future to the now.
  • Uncovering blockages with the why question.
  • Repeating affirmations.

In repeating affirmations, a hypnotist can give you a set of affirmations after a conversation that will help you feel more confident in your own abilities. You then repeat these while in self-hypnosis. Because you are then in the hypnotic state you are more likely to take those affirmations for the truth. These can be affirmations such as:

"I can do anything."

"Everything is inventible."

"The perseverer wins."

These are just examples. Depending on your beliefs, a hypnotherapist may give you other suggestions for action.

The why question helps you get to the heart of your problem. By asking yourself five times why you find something, you get to the problem and can solve it. Sometimes you find out that the answer to that fifth question, for example, does not make sense at all and when you just "do" something you quickly find out what does make sense.

An advanced technique taught in the Hypnosis Institute's 2.0 training is working from a successful future back to the now. You are first put into hypnosis and go to the point in the future where your business is something you can live on or earn x amount of money with it. Then in hypnosis you go back one step at a time from that point until the hypnosis session. Then you know exactly what you need to do to make your business a success.

In addition, you also have regression. With regression, you can quickly identify blocking beliefs and find out where that belief came from. You then, with the help of the hypnotist, revisit the moment in which that belief arose with the knowledge you now have, as opposed to the knowledge of that moment, to supplement it with new information and be able to interpret it in a different way. This can quickly cause the blockage to be given up.

Like me, are you someone who likes to help people, or do you just want to help yourself further? Then hypnosis can be a lot of fun. Come to a Hypnosis playshop to learn how to hypnotize people in 1 day.

Or come to a seminar to master the basics of hypnosis and be able to make people feel good.
