Tygo in psychiatry. Are the therapists the crazies?

For days I've been getting lots of messages about it. About Tygo Gernandt's new program, "Tygo in psychiatry.

I watched it and yes I knew, but that it was that bad? It's just literally a madhouse. Not necessarily the patients, but the therapists. What lunatics are among them.

Tygo in psychiatry

The director went to five different therapists with her anxiety disorder to see what she had next. She came back with 11 different labels! Unprecedented. The conversations were recorded.

My goodness. Shocking is not even the right word. If you study hypnosis, what happens is just criminal. If you say this to people in hypnosis (whatever happens because those people are open to suggestions in that moment) you damage them for life.

The direct suggestions posited as facts. You are a perfectionist and so get burnout. You have panic disorder and depression disorder. It went on and on. You score high on paranoia and also borderline.

If a trainee were to do a preliminary interview or intake with us like this, he would get wind of it with me. But apparently it is normal in mainstream care.

For me, it was also recognizable. They treated me the same way during an intake when I was in my 20s. I disagreed and walked away. Unsuitable for therapy.

Yesterday as I watched, I thought, "What if they had sent me to a clinic like this when I was 16. Then I too would have spent a year in solitary confinement probably...'

And then you have a different life. Clearly.

There are obviously a lot of good things to be found in healthcare, but the mental health system is crazier than the patients walking around it. A sick system creates sick people. That's obvious.

Then I think, "What if those people had passed by me or one of my trainees first?

Had they not been in that program now. I'm sure they would have.

Dear Edwin, I think it’s great that Tygo is creating this program. It’s ridiculous how quickly you get labeled. And not just once—no, some therapists and psychiatrists really go overboard with the labels. I just can’t wrap my head around 13 diagnoses for one person? I think things go wrong with the “labeling” process. Therapists don’t look at the person at all! They only look at your label, treat you according to your label, and unfortunately, you then become that label. I believe people need to be seen and, above all, heard. Of course, “something” has to be diagnosed in order to start working on your symptoms or problems. But I think it’s better to look more closely and listen to the person themselves—and, above all, to examine the root cause of their problems and symptoms. How did they come about, and what’s causing them to worsen or become a burden? Really engage with people—listen to them and truly see them. No one chooses to “voluntarily” be mentally unwell and live in pain! There’s always something that’s happened in a person’s life to lead to this. I don’t have any personal experience with hypnosis, but it would be wonderful if you could truly use it to help people become a better version of themselves. That would make the world a little bit better.
