The Meta Model

The meta-model is quite often taught in a way that doesn't work. It is often taught as a way to gather information. It is partly that, but mostly it is a way to influence. In the theme day pre-conversation, you are going to learn the meta-model as an influence tool and not just as an information gatherer.

What is the meta-model

The meta-model is a model that examines the language we speak. What do people really say and what exactly do they mean. As human beings, we speak about our experience. That experience we speak about we do so through language. Language is the tip of the iceberg.

If you look at the model shown here, you’ll see that the experience is filtered. Information is omitted, generalized, and distorted.
It also passes through all the things we believe and remember. Only then does it sink in. So the experience is filtered right from the start.

Then all sorts of internal processes happen and we feel emotions with them. From there, we then act.

When we start talking about that experience we reflect what's going on internally. In that language you can hear what is being left out, generalized and distorted. With the meta-model you get insight into what that is then.

The surface and depth structure

The experience being talked about is called the surface structure. In fact, language is the tip of the iceberg. Underneath it, all sorts of processes and decisions happen that are made before anything is said.

By asking questions, we gain insight into the depth structure. The structure of the process underneath. What are the presuppositions mentioned. What do you have to assume to make sense of it.

For example, this sentence...

The cat sits on the table

What should you hire?

There is a cat, a table and the relationship between the two. You take those presuppositions to make sense.

This is a simple statement, but when the sentences become more complex there are all sorts of presuppositions hidden in there. So these come in just like that when you are not aware of them.

What is the best question to ask then

The best question to ask in the meta-model is

How do you know.

This challenges the greatest generalization and provides more information. You are also directly influencing others with this. How? Because you are now forcing the person to start telling more about what is really going on. Often what lies underneath is not what is said first.

Get started with this and listen to people. Challenge them to tell more by asking "how do you know?" and you will find that you start to have much more impact in your communication with people.

Want to learn all about this?

Then come to the theme day "the preliminary conversation" and get a deep insight into people's communicative processes.

Let’s put this into practice right away: Mr. Selij, Edwin, how do you know all this? We also briefly covered this in my marketing and communication studies; it’s really nice to see a different perspective, and a practical application like this is a real breath of fresh air!

Hi Edwin, Doesn’t communication start with your own values and beliefs? If a conversation starts about cars, I can listen all I want but I won’t understand what’s being said—because I’m not interested in cars at all! And because I don’t find it important, I’ve consciously or unconsciously not given it a prominent place in my list of values. But if the conversation is about, say, sports, hypnosis, fears, or NLP, then I’m like a sponge—and as they say, I listen with different ears. Then I listen better and actually understand what I’m hearing. That’s because I’ve included these topics in my list of values. Do you get it? Best, Peter Gruteke

Good morning, Edwin. I’ve been going through the material you’ve provided for some time now. It really appeals to me, and my gut feeling tells me this could be my stepping stone. I’m struggling with my self-confidence and financial situation, and assuming that you possess all this knowledge, I hardly dare to send an email and ask questions. I’ve come to realize by now that there are no wrong questions—you just need the self-confidence to ask them. I’m afraid that someone else might be able to read and understand me better than I can understand myself. Where and how do I start to better understand myself and others? To be able to express myself better (communicate)? I know communication happens on multiple levels—how do you understand and use these tools together? I’ve started generating a little more income so I can begin one of your courses. Can you and would you be willing to advise me on which skill I should focus on mastering first? I’d love to hear from you because I’m actually starting to feel a bit desperate. Warm regards, Miriam

This tip comes at exactly the right time; I have a “meeting” coming up with people who only care about what they have to say. Let’s see if I can get them to open up. Thank you, Edwin. Best regards, Sico

Edwin, how do you know that someone becomes a master of the meta-model after they have been with you?Can you tell me what a "deep insight" is? Of course, that is also distorted and depends on perception. Define master for me, because as you know you have very good masters and also not so good and even downright bad masters. We have the proverb for a reason: "Gentle masters make stinking wounds."

So what is good or bad? There is only different, right? What makes and when is someone a good master I think this varies from person to person assuming for myself someone is a master when I understand and learn from another what is important/functional for me and can apply it. What is decisive for someone who is not yet sure to take a master class. According to me to convince his conviction.Good luck,Gr. Peter

@Ann I changed it. Thank you... And that for a post about language ;-)@Ray How do I know when someone becomes a master? If he starts applying the things I am about to tell him then he becomes the model master. What a master is to me is someone who in this case has mastered the meta-model and is above the terms. So someone who can apply it and not just know the terms by heart. Most people have learned the model but not the structure behind it. Because they have learned it from the book 'The structure of magic' there is a distorted idea about the application of the model.@Lizanne I re-learned the model from NLP master trainer Michael Breen. It gives a very different idea and you are going to learn that idea in the master class. Which question works best. What the hierarchy is in the model (that's something most don't know...) and how the Milton model, reframing and sleight of mouth fit into the meta model. That's a deepening in understanding for most people.

A really fun and clearly written piece. Now that I’ve read this, I definitely want to learn more! It’s always nice to learn more about communication. Hypnosis and NLP—it’s all so interesting!! :D

If I keep looking the way I’ve always looked, keep thinking the way I’ve always thought, keep believing the way I’ve always believed, keep doing the way I’ve always done, then what always happens to me will keep happening to me!!
