The 3 steps to successful hypnotherapy
You see a lot of differences in hypnosis and hypnotherapy. What I want to teach people in training are 3 steps. Unfortunately in most trainings they only pay attention to 1 step of the 3 and I see more and more level differences unfortunately so just an explanation of the 3 steps
The 3 steps of a successful hypnotherapy session
All 3 steps act as persuaders and are all equally important. In many trainings, you are not effectively taught how to start doing the first step.
This weekend the hypnosis 2.0 training began and someone wanted to join who had learned hypnosis elsewhere. The level difference was huge and it made me realize that the 2.0 training is really only suitable for people from the 1.0 training.
I didn't expect that, but it's becoming more and more apparent and one of those things that other training programs don't train well is step 1.
Step 1
The preliminary consultation is step one. That's where the hypnosis begins, and the goal of the 2.0 training is that you don't begin Step 2 until you are ready and the change has already been made at Step 1.
They don't always necessarily succeed, but that's the goal. Some trainings just ask the question "What is your problem?" and then "What would you like? I always wonder then...
'How do you know that's the real problem or just a symptom...'
In the preliminary interview, you want to accomplish the following things:
- Tackling fears of hypnosis
- Explaining what you will do in therapy and making the client believe that method is going to work
- Identify and already tackle the possible beliefs that are creating the problem
- Putting yourself in a position so that the client is going to believe you and is going to believe that this is going to work
- So turning the client into a "believer
Richard Bandler, one of the creators of NLP, I once heard me say "I don't start until I'm ready. For a long time I didn't understand that very well but now I do. In the pre-conversation, you sow the ideas and suggestions so that if step 2 did not happen, there would still be a change.
Then step 2
Step 2 is hypnosis and hypnotherapy, and that's where the following things are important:
- Work with hypnotic phenomena such as the eye-lock, levitation or another hypnotic phenomenon so that the client becomes convinced they are in hypnosis
- Get to the origin of the problem or Imprint or the ISE (Initial Synthesizing Event) with regression
- Also track the activation of the problem (the AE or Activating Event)
- Provide the discharge of the problem
- Create another unconscious automatic program with the progression
Very many trainings do not teach you to effectively release a traumatic experience properly through catharsis. If this is not done then chances are that the symptom will simply shift.
The other day I had a client with fear of flying who had been everywhere and had also done hypnotherapy. There they had only treated the problem (read the symptom).
The man had a fear of flying, not a big problem you would think, but the fear of flying was simply a symptom. It stemmed from a "childhood trauma" and from a trauma from the hospital. Those situations together created the fear of flying later on. If you were to focus only on fear of flying, it would never work out.
And it had happened.
Now we did go through all the situations and the release was tremendous. The man now flies everywhere again without tension. That's the difference when you don't do symptom management, but effectively identify and release the origin.
And then step 3
At step 3, you thoroughly test the problem. Again, most therapists pay no attention to this or a very little.
This step is as important as the rest of the steps. This is because every time a client cannot retrieve their problem more they literally reinforce the change in their brain.
So you have to do that often, and sometimes I spend 10 to even 20 minutes doing that. I am then sure that they cannot fall back into their old behavior.
How to do that is a bit much for an article, but it's important that the client really can't pick up the old feeling.
Want to learn hypnosis yourself?
Want to start learning this? Then look carefully for hypnosis training programs that teach you these 3 steps. Most brush it off as unimportant but that's because they can't do it themselves.
You can imagine for yourself that if the origin of a problem is not effectively removed that all sorts of symptoms can develop.
On November 7 there will be another hypnosis playshop where you can learn about me, my way of training, and see demonstrations of hypnosis sessions in an approachable way.
You can sign up here and it's a day you really just have to experience once :-)
