Language learning under hypnosis is faster than without hypnosis

In the Netherlands, you learn many languages at school. As early as elementary school you can learn English and there are more and more languages you can learn in high school, such as French, German, Spanish, Arabic and Chinese. Therefore, we are often very proud of our language knack and this in turn has worked out well for getting European Institutions in the Netherlands that are currently still in England. Among other things, our high level of English has contributed to this.

Do you (whether you are already an adult or just still in high school) want to master a language quickly? Then hypnosis can certainly help you.

Learning foreign languages can be very important when working in the Netherlands. There are even restaurants where only English is spoken. In addition, there are many companies in the Netherlands that operate internationally. Therefore, sometimes you suddenly have to learn a new language because you have to do business with people from countries that speak that language.

Quickly learn a language

Don't have the luxury of joining classes in high school anymore? Then the website Duolingo is ideal for learning a second (or3rd) language especially if you can already speak English.

With this website, you learn a new language in much the same way you learn a new language in high school. First you start with little words, such as mom and dad, boy and girl. And gradually you move on to sentences, such as "I want coffee with milk."

Business-wise, this may not be the ideal solution, but for a vacation, it is well worth it.

In the process, you can also write down the words so you can learn them offline under hypnosis as well.

Hire someone

By hiring someone who may teach in the language you want to learn, or who is even a native speaker of that language, you ensure that you learn all the ins and outs about the language. Mistakes such as King Willem-Alexander made in Mexico will then not happen to you, because you will also know about the cultural differences.

In the process, you can meet with that person in a café or elsewhere to talk only in the language you want to learn.

Putting words on objects in the home

Another way to learn a language quickly is to stick the words of objects in your home on the object. A post-it on the door, door handle, kitchen cabinet, mug, plate, chair, table, couch, sink and so on.

It may be a bit crowded on the eyes for a while, but then because you are confronted with it so much, you learn the names of everyday objects faster by heart.

This combined with conversations with someone whose native language is the language you want to learn is definitely going to help you master a language quickly.

List the most commonly used words in the language

How likely are you to have to use the word lawyer? How likely is it that you should use the word cookie? Which words do you use daily and which words only occasionally?

A big part of knowing a language is knowing the most important words of a language. Therefore, make a list of the words most commonly used in the language and the ones you think you need.

Now you probably only need 20% of the language to get by, and this means it will be a lot easier to quickly learn a language that you can also apply practically.

Like the post-its, you can review this list daily to learn the most important words in your new vocabulary.

Why would hypnosis help learn a new language?

Hypnosis doesn't just help with learning a new language. It helps in learning all kinds of new skills. Therefore, it is also very attractive to make use of hypnosis to do your homework.

The reason hypnosis helps learning is because it affects certain brain regions. The reduction of activity in the prefrontal cortex helps learn new skills. Hypnosis reduces activity in this brain area ( 1).

Hypnosis to master a second language

In recent years, there has been increasing research on language learning under hypnosis. A study in which participants learned Spanish and had to learn a list of 21 words within a week for this purpose found that participants who used hypnosis for this purpose had significantly better results than people who tried to learn the list without hypnosis ( 2).

Techniques that can be used to learn include:

  • Post-hypnotic suggestions
  • Repetition of words and meaning

Post-hypnotic suggestion

For example, research shows that people who have difficulty reading class material, such as a book on language, because it is just too boring, can benefit from the suggestion that reading that book is actually incredibly interesting, such as:

“If you sit down this afternoon to do your homework on learning X, you’ll suddenly realize how fascinating the language is. You’ll see where it differs from Dutch and where it’s similar. This makes the puzzle of X and the use of that language a lot more interesting.”

This is just one example of post-hypnotic suggestion. Depending on your motivations, beliefs and interests, you may receive a suggestion more applicable to your situation.

Repetition of words and meaning

Many people are also familiar with the cartoon Dexter and Deedee. Dexter was a brilliant little boy who tried a form of hypnosis the day before his French test. He put on a walkman while he slept that repeated "omelet du fromage" all the time. The next day he woke up and all he said was "omelet du fromage." The girls thought he was great, but he began to fairly panic because he couldn't say anything else.

The effects of repeating the words and meaning while under hypnosis are slightly different than those for Dexter, though, in that, unfortunately, it doesn't work while you sleep.

You yourself or your hypnotherapist can help you with recordings of the words you want to learn and their meanings.

You then sit or lie down in a comfortable place at home. You focus on your breathing and close your eyes. Then you turn on the recording while your attention stays focused on this sound.

By repeating this every day, in addition to other steps to learn the language, you will notice that you will master the language faster than without hypnosis. Especially if you are very susceptible to hypnosis.

Hypnosis for pronunciation

Research that took place in the 1970s shows that hypnosis very much helps with pronunciation when learning a foreign language, such as Thai in the study ( 3). In this study, people had to pronounce certain phrases without hypnosis, under hypnosis and after hypnosis.

People who entered deep hypnosis had significantly better pronunciation than those who were only lightly hypnotized. Thus, the degree of hypnotizability affects the effect of learning under hypnosis.

During your next vacation or business trip, do you want to sound like someone born in the country you need to speak the language of? Then learning this language under hypnosis is definitely worth a try.

Complete language lessons under hypnosis

So you can do targeted exercises with hypnosis to improve language learning, or you can take a class completely under hypnosis.

The class is actually taught in the same way as a normal class. Parts of text are read aloud after which there is additional explanation of how the text works and what grammatical rules apply.

The difference is that you lie instead of sit and are first put into a hypnotic state. This is done through breathing and relaxation exercises.

The benefit of this is that you are totally focused on the lesson and less likely to be distracted by what is happening in class or outside when you can look out the window.

This way of learning a language is especially suitable for listening and speaking skills of the language. In fact, writing must be done in a more active posture and is therefore more difficult to do in hypnosis.

However, having a flow while doing homework is similar to being under hypnosis.

So, learning a language quickly is possible with hypnosis and a few practical tips.
