Overcoming fear of flying, how do you go about it?

Fear of flying is common and is nothing to be ashamed of. However, many people with a fear of flying do realize that it would be very helpful to overcome that fear of flying, especially if you enjoy (distant) travel. After all, it is very difficult to travel outside Europe without flying, and even within Europe, the car is not always the ideal solution. The question, of course, is how exactly to go about it, overcoming fear of flying. In this article we give some brief tips for people who want to overcome their fear of flying.

Overcoming fear of flying

If you want to overcome your fear of flying, you must first identify very clearly what exactly you are afraid of. Do high altitudes frighten you, or perhaps you get nervous about being with very many people in a small space that you can't just get out of? Do you worry about the safety of the plane or do you become uncomfortable when you have no solid ground under your feet?

When you can pinpoint very precisely what you are afraid of, you make the fear a lot smaller and can focus on that. That makes it a lot easier to overcome fear of flying.

Another tip is to tackle your anxiety in small steps. A trip to the airport can be an important step in overcoming your fear of flying. You don't have to get on a plane right away, but you can watch the planes take off from the entrance hall until you feel comfortable.

Look at the various airplanes and you will find that there is very little to be afraid of: everything follows a careful pattern. When you are familiar with the airport as an environment, you are much less likely to get nervous when you actually decide to fly.

One of the most important things to do when you want to overcome your fear of flying is to educate yourself properly. You only need to do a quick internet search to find that flying is actually one of the safest modes of transportation.

When a plane crashes, it's immediately big news and that makes many people afraid to fly, but you don't have to let the media scare you: the facts are on your side when you want to overcome your fear of flying. Statistically, even the car ride to the airport is more dangerous than the flight itself.

Hi Edwin, over the years I’ve developed quite a few fears. It started with a fear of flying. And I was with a friend at a rock formation, and then he came to stand behind me—I couldn’t handle that either—and I got really scared, especially since we were standing at a certain height and had climbed up there. He felt the same way too. It seemed like a kind of déjà vu. And then I have a fear of the dentist and a fear of sitting next to others in a car, which is absolutely no fun for me—I can’t enjoy it or relax. Best regards, Irmgard
