Uncertainty is resolvable
Are you always insecure?
Are you sure? Then at least you are sure.
I use these phrases often. Sometimes in a different form such as: 'Do you always feel like a failure? Well then at least you succeeded...'
It is very interesting to see what happens to people then. Beliefs then begin to falter
Uncertainty is resolvable
This, of course, is due to generalization. When you say something along the lines of "It's always like that" or "Everyone's like that" or "No one does anything," of course that makes no sense at all.
Just like when people say all foreigners are bad or something. Then I think of those seven billion people living outside the Netherlands, because they are foreigners. If all of them were bad, that would be a lot of them.
And that, of course, doesn't add up.
Anyway, why generalize if it's not true anyway. Well, this is how we learn quickly and it is also the most energy efficient. If I have decided than all men are bad, then I don't have to start thinking with every man whether that is so or not. Costs energy.
And energy is important, because your brain already takes at least 20% of all the energy you have. So the more economical you can be with your energy, the more energy you save and the longer you might live as a result.
Thinking is very difficult for people. And how often do you do it? You may think very often, but you probably almost never do.
Solve this sum? 18×32
The first thing that happens now is that you drop out. You're not going to do it, because then you really have to start thinking about it. But imagine you are going to do it now, out of your mind.
Then your breathing goes up, your heart rate goes up, you sweat more and your brain activity is now occupied to solve this sum.
Have you given it a try by any chance? That's pondering. How many times a day do you do something like this? Few I guess. The rest you do all unconsciously automatically and with generalizations. Always, everybody, never, all, nobody, are words that imply a generalization and are not correct.
If you find a counterexample, it already falters immediately. Nice to pay attention today and give people a counterexample. See what happens.
