Obesity increases risk of weak bones
Too much fat tissue in relation to body weight is not something you want to walk around with for too long. Being overweight and obese can cause a variety of medical complications. Research on obesity is becoming more and more extensive and there has been another discovery
Obesity increases risk of weak bones
For example, Osteoporosis is a cause you can get from obesity. Osteoporosis results from decreased bone mass and increases the risk of bone fractures because bone strength decreases. Not only are you already putting too much strain on your bones, your bones are getting worse.
Fat in tissue, organs and blood may be an increased risk for osteoporosis. Harvard Medical School of Boston researchers found that hidden fat remains in the bones of most obese people. They took a body scan of 106 obese but healthy people. Both men and women who were obese but still healthy.
So what was so interesting about this?
Most interestingly, the body scans showed that warped fat was already stored in a number of places such as: liver, bone marrow and muscle. But also on their hip, thighs and abdomen.
People all have different builds and figures. But people with an "apple figure" are most likely to get it if they don't do anything about it. So, according to 1 of the researchers, Dr. Miriam Bredella, those people are most at risk.
More fat in the bone marrow is also found in people who have osteoporosis. Dr. Bredella also says the following about this: "At one time, people, doctors and researchers thought that obesity had benefits. That it protected us from bone loss. So that's not true.'
In the bone marrow live osteoblasts. Osteoblasts are the cells in the bone marrow that build bone. The more fat cells in the bone marrow, the weaker the bone, according to Dr. Miriam Bredella. And that is very disturbing when you realize that it is becoming more common.
In the Netherlands, over 850,000 people suffer from osteoporosis. Around the world, 1 in 3 women get osteoporosis and 1 in 7 men get osteoporosis over the age of 60. Now with the addition of people who are overweight, this number is sure to rise.
