May 4: Memorial Day and International Nude Gardening Day

This was brought to my attention by Marjolein if I couldn't write something about this. And I always like that when people point out things I can do something with.

Like this.

May 4 is a fraught day for many people, but I didn't know that May 4 today was also nude gardening day, and when you start combining the two it becomes quite distinct. I immediately have images to go with that

May 4 world nude gardening day

Which is not very convenient if you have neighbors like me.

They are very sweet people, but I don't necessarily need to see them gardening naked. Then again, if they want to, I certainly won't stop them.

What is such an interesting contrast with these two very different contexts is that with one people find it very good and the other they don't find it very appropriate I think.

So having people walk in uniform with medals is fine, but naked gardening is not. I think both are fine for the record, but I think quite a few people prefer the uniforms to the naked people. In fact, if you were to walk along naked tonight, you would be arrested. None of that is allowed.

And actually, this is strange, according to Osho, who I quote briefly. Osho was an interesting personality, better known as the Bhagwan, who also had his ideas about this.

He said, "It's fine to walk down the street in uniform and show that you fought in a war and killed people. But just having sex on the street that is not allowed. Killing people is a heroic act, having sex with people is punishable'

Now it's not so black and white, but also in my mind I see the people who have fought for our freedom as heroes (which I also don't want and don't need to change) and if I were to suddenly see people having sex on the street (who both want to), I also think that's a lot more distinctive than the man or woman in uniform.

This is why I find today such an interesting contradiction. We commemorate the victims of war and in the rest of the world it is nude gardening day. Because what is true freedom? You can be free in your country, but are you free from your own judgments?

Perhaps also remember the victims then who are victims of your judgments (and perhaps you are a victim of them too...)

And then enjoy gardening naked....

Watch out for the critters then 🙂
