Judge of Value and eggs hypnosis
Yesterday I watched the Keuringsdienst van Waarde back on TV. My father-in-law alerted me to it. It was about eggs.
It was mindblowing. I came out of my egg hypnosis after that program you might say. And maybe you will too after reading this piece.
Brown eggs cost 8 cents more at the supermarket than white eggs. Why? Because consumers want brown eggs.
Is there a difference between white and brown eggs? Yes there is!
White are better ...
Ok and then I had to hold my head up for a moment.
See, you used to have battery cages and there were chickens in them and they laid eggs. Those eggs were often white and so most people associated with that. White eggs are bad.
To differentiate themselves, chicken farmers started raising chickens that laid brown eggs. They didn't have that association yet. And they called those free-range eggs. And so hypnosis happened in the 1980s.
How can you tell if a chicken is laying white or brown eggs? By the wattles hanging by its beak. That's it. There is no more difference.
Although...
Chickens that lay white eggs, which lay more eggs per year, use less food and are therefore more sustainable and better for the climate.
And those white eggs are exactly the same as brown eggs, because the minimum egg you find in a supermarket is a free-range egg.
And I kept buying brown eggs because I was full of hypnosis that white would be less. It actually turns out that white is better compared to a brown egg.
Even the chicken farmer, who kept chickens that laid brown eggs, also said it: 'White is better for the environment, is more sustainable and even for production it's better. But yes, people want brown eggs...'
So that's why those brown eggs are 8 cents more expensive each.
Enjoy your egg 🙂
