In this blog article, we will discuss what emotional intelligence is, in what situations it can help you for certain successes, how to train your emotional intelligence and in what ways hypnosis can help you as well.

What is EQ?
EQ is the abbreviation for emotional intelligence quotient. Just like IQ stands for intelligence quotient. This is a certain score. The average IQ, for example, is 100 according to that IQ score and says something about the understanding people have of such things as mathematical calculations and general knowledge.
So for EQ, you can get a score in terms of your understanding of emotions in others and how to act in certain social situations.
Where a person's IQ can go as high as 200, the maximum score for EQ is 80. From 0-32 you have low EQ and from 33-52 you have average EQ. Women score an average of 47 and men score 42[1].
If you are emotionally intelligent you can:
Identify, name, understand, control and use emotions[2]. Not only for yourself, but also for others and even in groups[3].
Why is emotional intelligence important?
We are social beings, which means we need to work together to get things done in life. At the same time, we are not robots—we are beings with emotions that, in turn, influence our behavior. Understanding this makes it easier to work with other people.
It’s also important to understand your own emotions and behavior. In fact, the higher your emotional intelligence, the healthier you are[4]. This is likely because you’re better able to cope with stress. The link is strongest when it comes to mental health, but there is still a connection to your physical health as well.
In the process, it is important for your personal relationships and even success at work (source 2).
When you train emotional intelligence to improve your work it often helps to improve the following things:
- Collaborations
- Conflict Resolution
- Coaching Skills
- Job satisfaction
- How to easily find and hold a new job
As a teacher, it can improve your teaching skills (source 2).
Emotional intelligence and autism
Just a separate piece on emotional intelligence and autism. People with autism are often not as good at certain facets of emotional intelligence, namely not being able to properly assess others' emotions and therefore being socially awkward[5].
Assessing their own emotions can also be tricky, because emotions also give you guidance on how to behave.
What's interesting is that when behavioral problems develop in someone with autism, it often has a relationship to negative parenting as well. (As with "normal" children)
Problems that can arise when they do not know how to manage their emotions well are:
- Repeat Actions
- Being very rigid
- Apathy
Negative emotions they find most difficult to recognize. So they can't always tell when someone is angry (at them).
Mindfulness and even training with robots that simulate emotions can help people with autism gain more control over their emotions and behavior (source 5).
Leadership and emotional intelligence
Because EQ can do something for collaborations and coaching skills, this can also be useful if you are a leader, such as team manager.
In modern society, especially in the Netherlands, it doesn't work to be some kind of dictatorial leader. You need a little more finesse than that, and for that, emotional intelligence is important[6].
Leaders today, therefore, more often have the role of mentor and coach. They are also tasked with seeing the individual in the workplace, as well as fostering a team spirit.
Research also shows that the more emotionally intelligent managers are, the more successful the team they manage is.
Emotional intelligence training
So plenty of reason to train your emotional intelligence. It can bring many great opportunities, both personally and professionally.
If you want to train your emotional intelligence, it is important to pay attention to:
Self-Awareness
One way to improve your self-awareness is by keeping a journal. In addition, when you experience negative emotions or other strong feelings, you can take a step back, reflect on why you feel that way, and then realize that you decide how you behave. It’s all a choice.
Hypnotherapy can also provide interesting insights into yourself and why you do what you do[7]. So if keeping a journal isn’t helping, a hypnotherapist can assist you with this as well.
Self-Control
Self-control is important for staying calm and not making impulsive decisions you later regret. It also prevents aggressive behavior.
To improve your self-control, it’s helpful to be aware of the values you want to live by. What’s important to you? How do you want to be? Based on that, you can then adjust your behavior.
With hypnotherapy, you can also practice how to respond in certain situations or when faced with specific triggers. This not only helps with emotional eating but also helps if you want to calmly engage in a discussion with a coworker.
It also helps if you stop blaming other people for when things go wrong and instead look at your own role and what you can do differently in similar situations in the future.
That, in turn, is where hypnotherapy helps.
Social Consciousness
By social awareness, you can think of empathy and empathy. In difficult situations, many people look primarily at their own point of view, but put yourself in the other person's shoes and how they feel? Then problems can suddenly become very logical and a solution can be found more easily.
In many hypnotherapy techniques, your ability to empathize with others also plays an important role. You can practice this with a hypnotherapist until you’re able to empathize with others more quickly than before. This helps you reach a solution faster, simply because you’re more socially aware.
This includes tricks such as paying attention to a person's body language and intonation. If you want to become a hypnotherapist, these physical cues also play an important role in becoming a good hypnotherapist.
This can also come in handy if you have a coaching role at work or in your family.
In fact, you can then respond well to others' feelings, especially if you see that what they are feeling does not match what they are saying. Then you can discuss that.
Social Skills
Your social skills are about how you communicate with those around you. For example, whether you clearly set your own boundaries, but also whether you give people compliments when they deserve them.
Barriers to good communication can be found out and removed with hypnotherapy. Research shows that in adolescents with behavioral problems, hypnotherapy improves their communication skills[8].
For example, if something makes it difficult for you to give compliments or to express what you feel or truly see, a hypnotherapist can help you identify and overcome those barriers .
For example, maybe you learned as a child to stay quiet when you actually feel something you need to say, because you got negative reactions from your parents when you did this, for example.
The regression technique can be very useful for identifying these types of situations. You can then use various hypnosis techniques to eliminate the limiting belief and instead develop a belief that allows you to effectively communicate how you feel and share your ideas for improving certain situations[9].

Learning hypnosis can also be great for gaining a better understanding of how people feel and having the tools to help yourself and others deal with emotions.
