Debt counseling: Changing clients' money mindsets with hypnosis

Debt counseling is an important service that is incredibly valuable. Sometimes debt can leave people so stressed out that logical thinking about money is out of the question.

The best-known job of a debt counselor is to chart a household's financial flows. What expenses there are, how to repay debts properly and that people can also make some ends meet.

What people are less aware of is that a debt counselor also has a coaching job about money. Clients can be coached on controlling spending and keeping a positive mindset. Even when it takes a while to watch the little things.

If things get too complicated, a debt counselor can also refer clients to a psychologist.

But initially, knowing good and smart coaching techniques can also do a lot to help people.

Therefore, knowing hypnosis and hypnosis techniques can be invaluable to a debt relief professional.

Why do people get into debt?

There are all kinds of reasons why people can get into debt. Unfortunately, it is far from always "own fault, own fault." Losing your job, having a low-paying job at all, losing your health, are some of the reasons you can get into debt.

Besides being a practical problem, this can also have a variety of emotional problems.

Losing your job can also deal a serious blow to your self-confidence and self-esteem.

Illness is also something that can make you very insecure.

If you currently have a low-paying job, that often says something about the thoughts—or mindset—you have about money.

Managing money differently often happens only after thoughts about money are changed.

Self-confidence and money

It is sometimes said that how you see and experience the world is a reflection of your inner self. Of course, no one actually thinks, “I deserve to be in debt,” but research does show that there are connections between a person’s self-image and their financial situation.

In addition, coaching may sometimes involve sharing more knowledge about money and how it works. This can improve confidence regarding money, which in turn can lead to wiser financial decisions. Even improved self-confidence alone can make a difference in achieving financial health, regardless of one’s level of financial knowledge[1].

However, knowledge about money helps one save and avoid debt[2].

Hypnosis techniques can be used very well alongside financial coaching to increase a person's self-confidence and self-esteem.

Stress due to lack of money

A lack of money can cause stress. If you have a new plan for paying your bills, it’s really important to stick to it. Then you won’t have to worry about all the things that could still go wrong.

But if you have a good plan, then that’s enough, and all those other thoughts are mostly just fears.

These are ultimately just thoughts about the future, and not the truth.

Coaching in mindfulness and hypnosis can help you live more in the present moment and worry less about what might go wrong, thereby reducing stress caused by a lack of money[3]. Hypnotic suggestions can also shift the focus from what’s going wrong to what’s going right. This allows you to look toward the future with greater optimism.

Even if it may take years to get out of money problems.

Fear of poverty

Another fear people have about not applying to debt counseling is the fear of poverty. When in fact they are already in a poverty situation.

The annoying thing about poverty is that it can cause problems psychologically, making it difficult to break the cycle. For example, unwise decisions may be made regarding money just when things are already not going well.

In the process, poverty can cause you to live more in habits, rather than working toward a goal (such as getting out of debt)[4].

Of course, as a debt counselor, you help plan to achieve the goal of "getting out of debt."

To keep mood and motivation high, guided visualization can help. In that visualization, you help people imagine what their life will be like after achieving this goal. It's a good technique to give people courage about being able to achieve a debt-free life, even one with savings.

Another technique is performing progression. In this case, you have your client take one step back from this end goal each time, until they get help from you. This gives people a clear clear-cut plan for getting out of the doldrums financially and becoming confident in their own abilities.

In addition, the fear of poverty is often accompanied by a fear that many aspects of life will no longer be possible. The focus then tends to be primarily on the negative aspects. Using hypnosis techniques, you can help clients shift their focus to what is still possible.

For example, if they value exercise and can no longer go to the gym, it is good to know that there are also many workouts on YouTube and Pinterest that people can perform. All for free!

When the gym functioned as their "social" place, they can also meet with their gym friends to go for a walk, run or bike ride in the great outdoors.

People may also hold the belief that if they are poor, they can no longer afford good-quality food. These beliefs can also be easily dispelled by helping people eat fresh, seasonal food. It’s often the cheapest option, and even in winter, there are vegetables that are harvested then and available fresh, without having to pay top dollar for them.

Shop addiction

Unfortunately, a shopping addiction can also lead to debt. In that case, it can be helpful to work on self-control so that the person at least avoids making impulse purchases.

In fact, research shows that there is a link between having good self-control and a good financial situation. Swedish research shows that people with self-control are more likely to save money monthly and experience less stress from money[5].

This can include looking at causes of addiction so that the cause can be solved in a way other than buying something.

With hypnosis, you can then explore what buying stuff gets the person. Then you can help the person explore whether he or she has had that feeling earlier in life, but without buying anything to do so.

Then, in fact, the person has already used another way to achieve feeling good in life, but just needs to be reminded of it.

They can also work with a technique to replace the momentary "shopping" with another activity. So if the feeling of "shopping for a while" is evoked, the person can actually start cleaning.

This hypnosis technique is also widely used for other addictions, such as candy addiction, a woman once helped with this had never had such a clean kitchen floor.

Quit Smoking

Smoking is also an expensive way to cope with stress, and one of the easiest ways to save money is to quit smoking. The best part is that just one session can help people quit smoking[6].

If you know how this works, you can use an appointment for this to help your clients save money (and have better health 😉 ) very easily.

Hypnosis for debt counselors

As a debt counselor, you come to all kinds of people who have gotten into financial trouble for all kinds of reasons. Those problems can have many negative consequences, and knowledge of hypnosis can then help you provide suggestions that increase optimism and motivation to do the right things in addition to financial help.

In the process, this knowledge can help you as people block when you give certain advice about finances, such as canceling a gym membership, refinancing loans for oversight, or switching to other more affordable foods and stores.

Regardless of the cause of debt, hypnosis can give people back the self-confidence and self-esteem they need to work their way out of debt.
