Addressing your own trauma: this is how to break the cycle

It is said that we live in a traumatized society: almost everyone carries trauma with them to a greater or lesser degree. The best thing you can do for the world, your children and - retroactively - for your parents is to deal with your own trauma (read: face it, feel it through, heal it, transform it). If you don't do this, chances are you will pass on your injuries to your son or daughter. It is then as if history repeats itself. The good news: that whole bloodline of generational trauma can stop with you! This is how you break the cycle.

Here's how to break the cycle

Trauma being passed on

By actively healing and transforming a traumatic aspect in you, you ensure that you are cleansing the path of the next generation. So your healing process is more than personal development; it is familial development. The most important step here is to face the painful memories of the past. A psychotherapist can guide you in this process.

At HIN, we are pleased to see increasing attention to the effectiveness of psychotherapy for trauma. The news site nu.nl also published an article about how trauma can be passed on to your children. Some reactions under the article also immediately hinted that not everyone understands the impact of the message:

'I want to thank my parents for never talking about it and hiding the trauma away. As a result, I don't suffer from it now...'

It is very likely that this person has or will suffer. In fact, transgenerational or self-inflicted traumas do not need to be talked about in order for them to be passed on anyway. They are stored in your body and unconsciously passed on to the child during parenting, or even during pregnancy.

The usefulness of memory

Blocking a memory or repressing the associated emotion will not solve your problems and may even make them worse. In fact, painful or traumatic memories have an important survival function. Bad behavior, addictions or toxic relationships can trigger pain years later. However, you try to avoid these situations in the future, and therein lies the usefulness of negative memories that you remember better than positive memories. They keep you from repeating certain behaviors. So: let's feel through instead of forgetting.

Placing new mental associations

Removing the traumatic aspect requires placing new and safer mental associations to certain outside influences that trigger the memory.

Your child breaks the cycle

What you often see reflected in parenting is a child making the same (wrong) choices as their parents at certain points in life. Another counterfactual scenario is that the child consciously chooses to do things differently. The child is then able to break the cycle; a new or higher consciousness is created. A parent always has their own emotions and struggles in addition to parenting. The path of self-development continues until your death. The point is to give your child a good foundation: the guidance as well as the space to make their own right choices. And when the time is right, to heal any traumas together or individually.

"35 minutes to take away 35 years of suffering."

Hypnosis is very effective for trauma. There have been plenty of patients where after sitting in the hypnosis chair for half an hour their entire sense of fear was gone. For example, in the case of an ex-military man, the sounds in his head had completely disappeared. He found this very special, because he had been on therapy and medication for 35 years, and a hypnosis session had helped him considerably in one fell swoop.

3 benefits of hypnotherapy for trauma:

1. You get to certain memories faster because suggestions can eliminate any feelings of shame and guilt about that memory.

2. It offers the right guidance: in a safe way you retrieve the trauma instead of trying to get there in a destructive way. The client's safety is also maintained between sessions.

3. A comprehensive look is first taken at which technique is appropriate to resolve the trauma. In regression, you are guided to release while under hypnosis. You can then view the moment from a different perspective than you normally do. With new information you can change your memory so that it no longer has the effect on you that it always had.
